A Rose from the Prison

2026-03-04

The iron gates of the prison slammed shut behind me, and I finally left that hell. "Christine Anderson," Jared James stopped me at the banquet, his voice dripping with contempt, "How dare you come back?" I swirled my wine glass and gave Nikki Davis, standing next to him, a smile: "I came back to see when you all will get your comeuppance." "You think that teaming up with Sean Lewis means you've won?" He sneered coldly, "A thug fresh out of prison..." "Mr. James," a cold voice cut in, Sean Lewis's hand sliding around my waist, "Are you talking about my wife?" His face instantly drained of color. Sean Lewis leaned down, whispering in my ear—but loud enough for everyone to hear, "Tell them, darling, why we're back." I locked eyes with Jared James's trembling pupils and smiled: "To take back everything you stole from me—from now on, how's that sound?"收起

Chapter 1 of "A Rose from the Prison"

The heavy iron door of the prison slammed shut behind me with a loud bang. The sunlight was so bright it made me squint—I hadn't seen the sky this clear in ten years. I raised my hand to shield my forehead; light slipped through my fingers and fell onto my faded, worn-out pants. In the distance, a black car was parked, gleaming and clearly expensive. I knew who had come to pick me up—Jared James. He wore a gray trench coat, his hair neatly combed. He looked a little more mature than ten years ago, and a bit heavier too. He strode over quickly, holding a black coat. "Christine, it's chilly—put this on." I took a step back, avoiding the hand he reached out. "Mr. James, I'm good." I called him Mr. James, deliberately putting some distance between us. His hand froze in mid-air, his eyes darkening. "Christine, I know you hate me." The word "hate" is too mild; what I feel is a scar that's already healed over, not something I can simply call "hate". "What about Nikki?" I changed the subject, my voice so calm it was like I was talking about someone else. He hesitated, swallowing hard. "She's at home, said she prepared dinner." "Are you married?" I kept asking, my eyes locked on the wedding ring on his left hand. The ring gleamed, stabbing painfully at my eyes. "...Yeah, the wedding happened three years ago." His voice dropped a little. "Not bad." I nodded and turned, heading toward the bus stop. He grabbed my arm firmly. "Christine, back then, I never expected the sentence to be so harsh. I thought it would be at most two years..." "Never expected?" I laughed, dry and bitter. "Jared, you're a judge. How could you not know the maximum punishment for falsely accusing someone of stealing a dowry?" His face instantly paled. He let go of my arm, his fingertips trembling slightly. "I was deceived by Nikki back then. She cried, saying you stole her dowry and even showed 'evidence'. I..." "Enough." I cut him off, not wanting to hear any more excuses. "Ten years—I spent ten years inside, counting every single day. You and your new bride had three peaceful years. What else is there to say?" He opened his mouth, trying to say something, but in the end, he just sighed. "Get in the car first, I'll take you to where you're staying." I didn't refuse him again, not because I'd softened. It was because I knew I was broke now—not even enough money for a bus fare.

My Vicious Patient

I'm Wendy, a psychologist who can untangle people's mental knots, yet cannot heal the pain in my own heart. Since a rainy night seven years ago, I suffered from severe stress disorder after saving my patient Mary. I even felt nothing but fear at the touch of my beloved. My husband Yale sustained a permanent leg injury trying to save me, which ruined his future. But I couldn't even give him a hug. "Wendy, it's been seven years. How long exactly do you want me to wait?" I clutched the pregnancy test report, hoping it would be a turning point for our marriage. But then I ran into him and Mary dating in the café. And what Mary was holding...

The Song of Our Downfall

Neon lights glare, the air thick with the stench of booze. When a customer's hand grabbed my ankle, I didn't pull away. "Hey gorgeous, forget the song. Drink... drink with me..." His words hung in the air, caught halfway out. Because Matthew Truman had arrived. Seven years, over two thousand days and nights, I had imagined our reunion countless times. But never like this—he stormed the stage, yanked the man away, and then slapped me hard across the face. "Giana Lewis," he said coldly, "Have you sunk this low? Singing for money in a place like this?" A burning pain flared across my face. I bent down and picked up the microphone that had been knocked to the floor—along with...

My Robot Husband

When Mary burst in, I caught sight of the bulge in her belly beneath her loose coat. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her nails dug almost into my arm: "Ruby! You hypocrite!" The eyes of the teachers around us locked on us in an instant. "Mary, calm down and talk sense—what's wrong with you?" "What's wrong?" She shoved me away violently, her scream echoing down the hallway. "Look at my belly! This baby is Morgan's!" "You got me into his company years ago—you wanted me to be his plaything all along!" "What nonsense are you spouting? Morgan's not that kind of man!" She slammed down a stack of photos and papers. "This is the paternity test report, these are our...

An Usurping Love

My lower abdomen still ached when David showed up at the ward door with Melody in tow. "Fiona, sign it. We're even after this." He slammed the divorce papers down on the bedside table, his eyes cold as ice. I clenched the bed sheets tight: "David, you only believe her? I was the one on the operating table back then!" Melody leaned into his arms and laughed: "Fiona, the evidence is conclusive. Stop quibbling. David's just recovered." "Evidence?" I let out a bitter laugh. "You bribed my parents to lock me up. You stole the credit that should've been mine!" David cut me off sharply: "Enough! Melody donated a kidney to save me, while all you care about is vanity!...

My Brother's Fiancee

At seven in the morning, the plane pierced through the clouds, and the city beneath me spread out like a shard of ink-soaked jade. I clenched my passport, knuckles whitening. Not to return, but to see with my own eyes whether the bride waiting for my brother at the end of the wedding aisle was truly the one who, seven summers ago beneath the camphor tree, stole all my days. The wind brushed past the porthole, carrying the chill of old wounds, reminding me: some debts can only be paid with champagne tainted with blood on the spot.收起

A Life for a Debt of Sin

The neon lights of the Nightfall Club dazzled the eyes. John Collins clamped down on my wrist, his palm burning hot. "Karen, come with me." His voice was tight. I wrenched free with a cold laugh. "Lawyer Collins, why didn't you tell me to come with you when you sent my brother Caleb to prison?" His face drained of color. "It was a misunderstanding. Jessica she..." "A misunderstanding?" I stepped closer. "You defended her personally. You pushed Caleb, a man with the mind of a ten-year-old, into hell. And now you call it a misunderstanding?" "Caleb gets out of prison next month. I'm here to pick him up." His gaze was stubborn. I burst out laughing, tears streaming down my...

She is the Fighter

For eight years, I guarded Jim's family estate on that land soaked in gunsmoke, cheating death countless times. After eight years, I returned home full of anticipation, eager to see him and the son I hadn't seen for a long time. But when I walked out of the airport, exhausted, what I saw was him embracing another woman—while my son sweetly called her "Mom"! "Jim, who is she? Why is Felix calling her Mom?" My voice trembled, and my heart felt like it was being torn apart, yet he wore a cold expression. "We're in public—mind your words. She's just Felix's godmother." Eight years of devotion, and this is the humiliation I get! "Stop making a fool of yourself here,...

Light Through the Mist

On the day of my prenatal checkup, I stood alone in line until dark, only to come across a photo of my husband riding the carousel with his "friend." He smiled as he lifted her onto the horse, with the caption "The little one's not happy today." Meanwhile, the ultrasound report in my hand was still damp with my tears. It turns out the heartbeat in my womb was a bargaining chip he had set aside for someone else. From the examination room to the marriage, one severe bleeding made this painfully clear: someone treats vows like jokes, while I risk my life as the bet.收起
