A Sham Marriage

The hemp rope in the warehouse bit into my wrists, sending sharp pains shooting through them. My parents were tied up beside me, and the kidnapper's knife glinted coldly. "Bruce, save me!" I screamed into the phone, but Bruce's voice was filled with hesitation: "Melody has acute appendicitis. I have to get her to the hospital first." "Don't hang up!" I sobbed, but only a busy tone remained on the line. "No money, no lives!" The kidnapper roared. A flash of the knife later, my parents collapsed in a pool of blood. Two years passed. Caleb held a bouquet of white roses and proposed: "My heart aches for you. Marry me." I thought it was my salvation—until I got pregnant and caught him sneering in his office: "Sarah's baby can't stay. Her parents were nothing but obstacles." I burst in: "You planned the kidnapping, didn't you?" He tore off his gentle mask: "So what if I did? You and this baby are nothing but nuisances." "Aren't you afraid I'll get my revenge?" I clenched the hidden voice recorder tightly. He scoffed: "You're just alone. What do you have to fight me with?"收起

Chapter 1 of "A Sham Marriage"

Cold tape was stuck over my mouth, and the coarse rope around my wrists bit into my skin, burning with pain. Me and my parents were thrown into the corner of an abandoned warehouse; the smell of rust mixed with dust was choking and unbearable. "Don't scream. Stay still, and you'll live." The kidnapper kicked Dad's leg, his voice rough like sandpaper scraping. Dad straightened his neck. "Whatever money you want, I'll give it." "The money can wait—we're waiting for someone." The kidnapper stared at the door, the knife in his hand glinting coldly in the dim light. My mind's racing with Bruce Shaw—he promised he'd always protect me. My phone in my pocket suddenly buzzed. It was him calling. The kidnapper hesitated for a moment before ripping the tape off my mouth. "Bruce, help me!" My voice was shaking, barely holding it together. "Sarah? Where are you?" Bruce's voice was full of urgency. "I don't know, it's this abandoned warehouse..." Before I could finish, a woman's sobbing came through on his end. "Bruce, it hurts so bad. Can you get me to a hospital?" It was Melody Scott, the hidden light locked in his heart. "Sarah, Melody's got acute appendicitis. I've got to check on her first." Bruce Shaw's voice grew hesitant. "Don't panic, I'll get someone over right away." "Don't hang up! Bruce, don't hang up!" I yelled. The call was mercilessly cut off, the busy signal stabbing my ears like needles. The kidnapper cursed and taped my mouth shut again. Dad's face went pale. "He's not coming, is he?" Mom gripped my hand tight; her palm was soaked with cold sweat. Second by second passed, but the warehouse door never budged. "Boss, the call's not going through. That kid's not playing us, is he?" The tall, skinny kidnapper asked. The man they called the boss darkened: "No money, no hostages." A flash of a knife lit up the air, Mom's scream tearing through the silence. I fought like hell but could only watch my parents fall into a pool of blood. Before I blacked out, I thought I saw Bruce Shaw gently covering Melody Scott with a blanket. I woke up again in the hospital— the sharp sting of disinfectant making me want to puke. "Where are my parents?" I grabbed the nurse's arm, pressing her for answers. The nurse turned away, softly shaking her head. "My condolences." My whole world collapsed in an instant—I shook uncontrollably, couldn't bear the sight of red or the sound of the phone ringing. The doctor said I have severe PTSD and major depression. Bruce Shaw came to see me once and got hit in the forehead by the cup I threw. "Sarah, I'm sorry." He covered his head, eyes darting away. "Get lost." My voice was hoarse, like it was squeezed right out of my throat. After that, Bruce Shaw never showed up again, but his cousin Caleb Lewis kept coming to visit me at the hospital. "I brought you some porridge." Caleb set the thermos down on the bedside table, his voice gentle. I turned my face away, not wanting to say a word. "I know it's tough, but you have to keep going." He didn't push me, just quietly sat by my side. Rehab took two years, and Caleb came almost every single day during that time. Being able to speak again, being able to look at red without flinching—it was all thanks to him. The day I left the hospital, Caleb was waiting at the entrance with a bouquet of white roses. "Sarah Lynn," he said, handing me the flowers, his eyes serious, "I've liked you for a long time. Will you marry me?" I looked at him and suddenly remembered how my parents used to always tell me to find someone reliable. "You don't mind me, do you?" I asked. "Disgusted about?" He smiled, "I'm just feeling sorry for you." I nodded, tears falling onto the petals of the white rose. Three months later, we got married. The wedding was simple, just a few close friends. Bruce Shaw didn't come; I heard he and Melody Scott went abroad. I touched the ring on my ring finger, telling myself it was time to close that chapter.

My In-Laws' Twisted Wedding Rituals

"Phoebe, my mom said, you have to follow her rules today." Harrell Johnson grabbed my hand, his eyes avoiding mine. "What rules?" "You have to crawl on your knees from the door, two meters, not far." His voice grew quieter and quieter. I yanked my hand away: "Harrell Johnson, did you just say that again?" "Just two meters! Bear with it, I swear I'll make it up to you later!" He gripped my shoulders urgently. His mother's sharp voice came from outside: "Harrell! What are you dawdling for!" Pushed and shoved, I was dragged into the banquet hall, countless eyes burning on me like searchlights. His mother sat in the main seat, her red lips curling into a smirk: "Phoebe,...

The Prisoner Who Became a Doctor

"Is this the residence of Mr. Felix Shaw?" A familiar voice pierced my eardrums. I looked up. Chris and Mindy were standing at the courtyard gate, holding a little boy in their arms. "Are you a servant?" Chris frowned and sized me up. "You look like my ex-wife." Mindy linked her arm through his, looking down her nose at me. "Cut the crap! My son has a heart condition. Dr. Shaw has to save him! We'll pay you any amount!" "Dr. Shaw does not see outsiders." I held back my hatred, my voice cold as ice. "Quit putting on an act!" Mindy stepped forward aggressively. "We have plenty of money. Do you dare delay his treatment?" "Money?" I let out...

Beware the Bride in Black

"Margaret Quinn, I married you just to keep my family happy, so don't get the wrong idea." Oscar Sterling said this without even raising his eyelid, as if I were nothing more than a speck of dust stuck to the sole of his shoe. "I know." I stirred my coffee calmly and said, "I'm just repaying Old Mr. Sterling's favor from all those years ago." He sneered coldly, finally lifting his gaze to look at me, his eyes dripping with scorn: "Then you better behave yourself and not meddle in things you shouldn't, especially anything involving Debra." "So what you're saying is," I put down my spoon and met his gaze, "even if your so-called 'life saver' turns out to...

Yield For Love

Seven years of marriage, I became nothing more than a shadow of Mark Lynn, even my pinned chat message was "Lynn Family's Closest Contact Network." Until on my younger brother's wedding day, he placed the family crest I had crafted with my own hands around another woman's neck. There were over ninety-nine unread messages in the group chat, and one read, "Why isn't the sister-in-law here?"—exposing me as a laughingstock. I stormed into the hotel, my high heels shattering that pair of bangles, and crushing the last shard of tenderness within my heart. When Mark Lynn knelt to beg for forgiveness, I smiled as I dialed the lawyer's number—the heiress of a grand family does not divorce; she merely becomes...

She Rules

I took my brother's place to serve in the army for six years. On the day of my triumphant return, my armor yet unremoved, above my family's gate hung a white banner—upon which was inscribed the name of my "death in battle." Father brought forth the victory grog, its fragrance no different from the bowl he once poisoned me with. My elder brother wore my military honor robe, smiling as he welcomed the guests; the jade pendant at his waist bore the three characters "Mason Lewis." I traced the old scar along the gun barrel, lowering my gaze and softening my expression: Very well, I shall once again play the devoted person. When the lamps of the palace banquet are...
