After Eight Failed Weddings

2026-03-04

I, dressed in a wedding gown in the mirror, look like a pale porcelain doll. This is the eighth wedding—the invitations to the previous seven still lie at the bottom of the drawer, each postponed, all bearing the same woman's name. As the phone rang, my lipstick smudged at the corner of my lips. I knew this wedding was going to fall apart again.收起

Chapter 1 of "After Eight Failed Weddings"

My fingertips brushed the pearl embroidery on the hem of the wedding gown, the bridal boutique mirror reflecting my pale face. This is the eighth wedding Harvey Chow and I have been preparing. The invitations from the previous seven attempts still lay at the bottom of the drawer, each stamped with a different date. Behind every date stood his widowed sister-in-law, Rachel Watson, and her son, Carol. The first delay came because Rachel said Carol had a fever; Harvey rushed overnight to accompany them to the emergency room. When he returned, the wedding date had already passed. He only said, "It's not easy for Rachel to raise the child alone." The second time was when Rachel slipped at home. Though it was just a minor bruise, Harvey insisted on staying at her house to care for her, saying, "My brother left early; I have to bear his responsibilities." The third time, the fourth time, the fifth time... up to the seventh, I watched the dates crossed off on the calendar, the hope in my heart wrinkling slowly like paper soaked by rain. Today is the eighth time. Just as the makeup artist finished applying my lipstick, my mobile phone rang—it was Harvey Chow's number. I took a deep breath and answered, hearing his hurried voice through the receiver: "Juliette, Carol is in trouble. I have to go check on her." My hand froze mid-air, the lipstick drawing a crooked line at the corner of my mouth. "Harvey," I tried to keep my voice steady, "Today is our wedding. What happened to Carol?" "Rachel Watson is an adult. She can call an ambulance or ask a neighbor for help." "How can you be so cold-blooded?" Harvey Chow's voice instantly rose, "Carol is my nephew. If anything were to happen to him, how could I face my brother?" My knuckles whitened from gripping the mobile phone, the hem of the wedding gown crushed beneath my feet, wrinkled into a lump. "Cold-blooded?" I repeated the word, my eyes burning, "Our wedding has been postponed seven times, each time because of Rachel Watson. Have you ever thought about me?" "Are you really that desperate to get married?" Harvey Chow's tone was full of impatience, "It's not like you'll die if you don't get married, Juliette. Can you be a little more sensible?" The word "sensible" stabbed at my heart like a needle. I looked at myself in the mirror, clad in the wedding gown, and suddenly felt ridiculous. Before I could say another word, Rachel Watson's tearful voice came through the receiver: "Harvey, come quickly—Carol seems to be struggling to breathe..." Harvey Chow didn't utter another word and hung up immediately. I stood still, staring at the bride in the mirror, my tears finally falling. The door of the bridal boutique swung open. Harvey Chow rushed in; he didn't even glance at me, heading straight for the coat on the sofa. "Harvey Chow," I called after him, my voice trembling, "Are you really going to leave?" He looked back at me, eyes thick with impatience: "Juliette, stop making a scene. Carol is still waiting for me." "Making a scene?" I laughed, but the tears kept flowing, "Our wedding—do you see it as just a scene?" I slid the diamond ring off my finger—the one he had saved three months' salary to buy. When he first put it on my hand, he said he would love me forever. "Harvey Chow, let's break up." After saying that, I threw the diamond ring away with force. The diamond ring traced a silver arc through the air before landing on the ground with a sharp, clear sound.

Betrayal on the Day of Prayer

I dialed Felix's number. "Working overtime on the first day of the New Year? Your shared location says you're outside the busiest incense-burning hall on P Mountain." An irritated shout came through the phone: "Tina, are you out of your mind? Tracking my location? Can't I be here to pray for the company project?" "Pray for the project?" I pressed the play button on the recording. A woman's coquettish voice piped up: "Felix, once her IVF fails again this time, will you finally tell her the truth?" Felix's breath hitched. "You eavesdropped on me? Tina, don't push your luck!" "Push my luck?" I shot back. "You're here waiting for her to have a baby, while I'm the one suffering through...

Rise of the Invisible Wife

The pink lace panties on the marriage bed stung my eyes. This wasn't the first time. Caleb pushed the door open, tossed his coat aside casually. "Breakfast ready?" I slapped the panties down on the coffee table. "Whose are these?" He glanced at them, completely indifferent. "Probably the cleaner's. She must've left them behind by accident." "A cleaner would leave her panties on our marriage bed?" I stared him down. "Caleb, we're getting a divorce." He froze, then scowled darkly. "Emily, what are you throwing a fit about again? Haven't I given you enough?" "What I wanted was your sincerity, and you never once gave it to me." I stood up, ready to leave. He grabbed me, his voice turning...

The Hidden Test Result

In the fifth year of our marriage, I remained, in the eyes of outsiders, Mrs. Jones who "is always nice and obedient." I watched Leo approach in a tailored suit, the Jones Airlines emblem on his collar starkly visible. He ignored me but gave the flight attendant handing him documents a smile I had not seen in a long time, casually assigning her the most lucrative route. What truly broke my heart was when he brought Linda to the family gathering. After the gathering, he took my hand, speaking as though it were self-evident: "Linda is lonely and helpless; you should take extra care of her." "Very well, why not take her for a medical examination tomorrow?" Three days later,...

No Longer Your Shadow

That evening at the dinner table, I arranged three dishes and a soup as usual. My husband, Reed Carter, suddenly overturned the table, shards of broken porcelain mixed with food spilling all over me. My seventeen-year-old daughter and fifteen-year-old son continued scrolling their phones, not even lifting their eyelids. Only when he called my nephew a "fatherless, motherless bastard" did I realize this family had long since been rotten to the core.收起

Memories of a Dying Leaf

For ten years, my family took Yann Sharp in, covering his room, board, and tuition all the way through university. After his graduation, we entered the sacred bond of marriage as we had long hoped. On my twenty-sixth birthday, I saw my best friend, Antonia Smith, lying with my husband, Yann Sharp. Eight years later, the doctor handed me the diagnosis: "Terminal cancer, at most six months." I returned to my old home for one last look, and the first person I met was him there. Yann was dressed sharply in a suit, looking every bit the gentleman, yet his eyes held a nauseating complexity. "Hailey Lincoln?" He stood in front of me, "After all these years, do you still...

His Fire, My Bars

The moment the flames licked the curtains, my own brother, Troy Stewart, slammed the study door shut. "Don't blame me, Natalie." His voice came through the door, cold and mocking: "Only in the grave is there no rivalry." The acrid smell of gasoline filled the air. I smashed the window frantically; the sound of shattering glass was mixed with his final taunt: "Next time, keep a lower profile." Ten years later, at the Gilt Pavilion, I pressed the metal detector to his chest. He recognized me, his smile frozen on his face. "Surprised?" I lifted my eyes and enunciated deliberately, "Troy, long time no see."收起
