I have been dead for four years, yet I still linger in the earthly world. Today, they came again asking me for money—one hundred thousand, for my younger brother's wedding. I stand before the rust-stained gate of the electronics plant, beneath my feet the crack where I last breathed. My parents' wails hammer like nails, each driven deep into my translucent bones. But this time, I do not wish to run away anymore.收起

Chapter 1 of "After Working at the Electronics Plant"

My name is Nora Xavier. I have been dead for four years. It is now April, just past the plum rain season in the South. The air is heavy with an unshakable damp moldiness, like waterlogged old books—stifling and suffocating. I drift three feet above the ground at the entrance of the electronics plant where I once labored; beneath my feet lies a weathered concrete floor, its cracks cradling last autumn's fallen sycamore leaves. The red paint on the iron gate has peeled away in large patches, revealing mottled rust beneath. Those rust patches cluster as one, much like my brief and fractured life. When the wind stirs, the gate creaks with a familiar groan—the very sound the hinge made when I left the dormitory, four years ago. The sycamore tree at the entrance has grown much taller than it was four years past. The tree trunk had thickened by a ring, and the grooves on the bark had deepened; its shade now covered half the entrance to the plant premises. I remember the year I first joined the plant, this tree was only as thick as the mouth of a bowl. In the summer, when the sun was so scorching that we couldn't keep our eyes open, a few of us women workers would cram together under its shade to eat our boxed lunches. Now the tree has grown, yet those who once shared meals here have long since disappeared without a trace.

Dual Obsession

The sea wind cut like a knife. Leo Chaplin wrapped his arms around me from behind, his breath warm: "Joyce, Heidi fell. Go save her." My whole body tensed. His fingertips carried no familiar scent of tobacco—he was not Leo Chaplin, but Yuri Chaplin. I turned to face him, staring at that face: "You are not Leo." The facade shattered instantly, his eyes dark and ruthless: "So what if you've seen through it? Go save Heidi!" Suddenly, I laughed, tears streaming as I smiled: "Leo would never let me die for another woman." In agony, my heart turned utterly cold. I broke free from him, leaning back, half my body suspended in the air. "Joyce James, are you insane?!" Panic...

He Picked a Rose, Got the Thorns

On our wedding night, laughter from another woman echoed through the bathroom. When I opened the door, Herman Chester's shirt was half undone, and there was lipstick smudged on his neck. "What are you doing here?" He frowned, looking at me like I was an intruder in his private territory. "It's our wedding night." I spoke softly. "Just drunk," he replied. He raised a hand to button his shirt, impatience in every move. "Go sleep in the guest room." "I can sleep in the guest room," I held his gaze, "but I need to work at Chester Group." He snorted, as if he'd just heard a joke. "Suit yourself." Three years later, his first love, Nancy Frank, returned, and they...

The Uninvited Guest

"Mom, Daddy looks so handsome today." Greta lifted her little face, her eyes sparkling as she looked at me. I forced a smile and gently stroked her head. "Rachel," he said after seeing the guest off, then turned to me, the perfect smile on his face fracturing, "we need to talk." "About what?" I instinctively shielded Greta behind me. "Does it have to be now?" "It has to be now." He stepped closer, his voice lowered, yet every word cut sharply, "I've met someone I truly want to spend the rest of my life with." I stood frozen, a buzzing ringing filling my ears. "Kenneth Campbell, do you know what day it is today?" "I do." His gaze did not...

Out with the Jerk, In with Love

My phone jolted violently. The photo in the anonymous message seared my eyes—Mark and Lucy, kissing under the streetlamp. I stood up, gripping the phone tight as the door opened. "Had a good time at the party?" Mark's eyes darted away, his fingers trembling uncontrollably. "Just catching up with an old classmate. Nothing happened." I slammed the phone down in front of him. "Catching up involves kissing? Mark, do you think I'm blind?" His face drained of color in an instant. He swiped the screen off hard. "It was a dare! The others egged us on!" "A dare to French kiss your first love?" I sneered. "Haven't seen each other in five years, yet you're awfully close." He was lost...
