Chapter 1 of "Bearing a Child for Her Sister's Husband"
On the day our marriage reached one month, I returned from work and opened the door to find a heavy, oppressive mood filling the living room.
Leila Johnson sat on the sofa, her hands tightly clutching the hem of her clothes, her eyes red-rimmed.
I put down my briefcase, walked over, sat beside her, and gently asked what was wrong.
She looked up, her eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions, and after a long silence, she finally spoke.
"Lance, my sister... my sister ran off with someone."
Those words hit me like a thunderclap.
Leila Johnson's sister, Viola Johnson, had just married her husband, Calvin Goldberg, last month—so how could she suddenly elope?
I hadn't even recovered from the shock when Leila Johnson said something even more unbelievable.
"Calvin Goldberg is the sole heir of the Goldberg family. Now that my sister has run off, the Goldberg bloodline cannot be broken."
She paused, took a deep breath, as if summoning the resolve for a monumental decision.
"Lance, I want to replace my sister and bear a child for Calvin Goldberg. Only this way can we sustain the alliance between the Johnson and Goldberg families."
I thought I must have misheard, staring at her in stunned silence, unable to find words for a long while.
Seeing my lack of response, she took a printed agreement from her bag and placed it before me.
I took it and read through—each clause more shocking than the last. The core demand was that she bear a child for Calvin Goldberg to continue his family line, and that I must not interfere during this time.
A sudden rush of anger surged up from deep within me. I snapped the agreement into a ball and threw it violently onto the floor.
"Leila, do you even know what you're saying?" My voice shook slightly, trembling with fury.
"This isn't a simple favor—this is treating yourself like a mere reproductive tool. It's like you're renting out yourself!"
"We are husband and wife—how can you make such an utterly unethical demand?"
Leila Johnson was taken aback by my reaction but quickly steeled herself.
"Lance, I have no choice. The Johnson family cannot afford to lose the Goldberg family as an ally; this is for the sake of the entire clan."
"The clan? Then what does our marriage mean to you?" I looked at her with deep disappointment.
"This is just a stopgap. Once the child is born, we can go back to how things were." She tried to convince me.
"No way!" I said firmly. "I will never agree to such an absurd proposal."
That night, we had the fiercest argument we'd ever had since getting married. It ended bitterly, and I spent the night in the study.
The next morning, when I got up, Leila was already gone, and the crumpled agreement was nowhere to be found in the living room.
I had a bad feeling deep down, sensing that this storm had only just begun.
After washing up, I was about to leave for work when I saw my mother-in-law standing outside the door.
Her face was dark and grim; it was clear she was there to support Leila.
"Lance, have you made up your mind about what Leila told you yesterday?" She got straight to the point.
"Mom, this matter is not open to negotiation. I will not agree to it." My stance is resolute.
"Lance, don't be so ungrateful!" Mother-in-law raised her voice. "Leila is doing this all for the Johnson Family. As a member of the Johnson Family, you should support her."
"Support her betrayal of our marriage? Support such an immoral act?" I shot back.
"What betrayal? This is for the good of the family!" Mother-in-law was being stubbornly unreasonable.
"Family interests can never be built on sacrificing our marriage and dignity." I refused to back down.
Unable to persuade me, mother-in-law stormed off in a huff, leaving a sharp warning that I would regret this.
I watched her retreating figure and sighed helplessly, unsure of how much longer this marriage could hold.
