Charity in Disguise

The acrid sting of disinfectant pierced my nostrils as I knelt on the cold tiles, fiercely clutching the hand that was about to claim my mother's life. "Don't pull away!" I screamed hoarsely, yet my usually gentle and courteous husband met me with icy eyes and spoke with blase indifference: "One life in exchange for twenty-seven—it's worth it." They forced me to sign the Organ Donation Consent Form, the confession letter for a hit-and-run, and even threatened my mother's peace. I resolved to feign death in order to escape...收起

Chapter 1 of "Charity in Disguise"

The scent of disinfectant, cold and sharp, pierced my nostrils. I knelt on the icy tiles, an excruciating pain stabbing through my knees. Before me stood a man, clad in a crisp white coat, with a metal badge engraved "Charitable Pioneer" pinned to his sleeve. The world hailed him as an Earthly saint, claiming he had saved nine hundred ninety-nine lives. Yet only I knew that this man, Caleb Jones, was my husband—and the executioner poised to thrust my mother upon the dissection table. "Willow, rise." He extended his hand, his fingertips bearing their habitual chill, identical to the temperature of the operating room. "There are still twenty-seven people waiting; we must not delay." His voice was as calm as a still pool, betraying not the faintest trace of emotion. I gripped his trouser leg tightly, my nails nearly digging into the fabric, my knuckles whitening with effort: "That is my mother! Caleb Jones, how can you say such a thing?" He knelt down to meet my gaze, his eyes utterly calm, as though speaking of something inconsequential: "One life, in exchange for twenty-seven others — it is worth it." "Worth it?" I laughed until tears streamed down, shattering upon the cold tiles like broken glass. "Have you asked my mother? On her deathbed, she held my hand tightly, pleading that her body remain intact to face the divine!" Caleb Jones no longer argued with me. He rose and took the death certificate from the Nurse's hand. There was not a single hesitation as the pen met the paper, as if it were not a testament to the end of a life, but merely an ordinary form. Watching him sign, my heart felt as though gripped tightly by an invisible hand, every breath sharp with pain.

Tomorrow is the big day for Leo Lincoln and me; I wanted him to feel comfortable after drinking. But as I neared the private room, the conversation inside stabbed at my heart like an ice pick. "Yolanda Xavier likes that diamond ring, the limited edition. Blair Scott's surgery fee is nothing!" Leo Lincoln's casual voice was like a demon's whisper. In truth, I was nothing more than a meticulously crafted shadow, even the mole at the corner of his eye was copied onto her. The Capital's Lady

The person sitting next to me was saying, "Caleb Shaw climbed out of a pile of corpses and has now become a famous star." I clenched the silk handkerchief in my hand. On the stage, the figure in the moon-white costume began to sing — it was exactly The Peony Pavilion that I had taught him. The box door was suddenly thrown open. Caleb blocked my way and said, "Daisy, long time no see." "You've got the wrong person, sir," I said, trying to leave. "The cinnabar mole on your left wrist — I cut it with a pair of scissors back then. How could I be wrong?" He stepped closer. "Come home with me. I'll give you the status...

A Crippled Bride's Revenge

"Well, Linda? Still daring to take maternity photos with one leg missing—are you that desperate?" Whitney patted her pregnant belly, her eyes darting to my left leg, dripping with sarcasm. I tightened my grip on the camera strap. "Every penny I earn is clean, unlike you who climbed up by making me miscarry and break my leg." "You're lying!" She scurried behind Daniel, shrieking. "You were the one who couldn't keep him! You were the one who fell down the stairs!" Daniel pulled out a stack of cash and slammed it on the table. "Take the money and leave. Don't make a scene." "A scene?" I laughed until tears came, my prosthetic leg tapping lightly against the floor. "Where was...

The Girl Who Stole My Life

I will never forget the day of our seventh wedding anniversary, when Jonas Lowell brought home a girl. "Leah, look at her. Doesn't she remind you of yourself when you were young?" The girl timidly called me "Leah," and the glass in my hand shattered on impact. Hot water scalded my foot, yet he protected her first: "Sarah, did it burn you?" Later, on my birthday, he placed the pearl necklace my mother left me around her neck, right before my eyes. "It's just a necklace, isn't it? Sarah liked it; what's wrong with giving it to her?" I could no longer endure it and demanded a divorce. He actually locked my wrists with an iron chain. "As long as...
