Chapter 1 of "For the 13 Children"

My name is Yvonne Sue. I am a professional Ferryman of the Dead, gifted with the ability to traverse the border between the living and the dead. Four years ago, I was recruited by the National Special Department, and since then, I have embarked on a secret mission unknown to the world. This time, I received an urgent assignment: to save the children whose lives had not yet ended in a tragic school bus accident. The moment I received the news, I rushed without pause to the hospital. Along the way, my heart was unbearably heavy, and the innocent faces of those children kept flashing through my mind—they should not leave this world so prematurely. At last, I arrived at the hospital. Ignoring my exhaustion, I dashed straight toward the operating room. However, just as I was about to enter the operating room, a tall, beautiful woman suddenly appeared before me, stretching out her hand to block my way. I frowned slightly and lifted my gaze to her. She wore a perfectly tailored dress, her long, wavy hair draped casually over her shoulders, and her eyes held a natural air of pride and disdain. I recognized her at once—she was the famed campus belle of this medical school, Lorelei Lawrence. "Hey, what do you think you're doing? This is the operating room, not somewhere you can just stroll into." Lorelei Lawrence sized me up from head to toe, her tone thick with disdain, as if I were something unclean. To her, I was simply dressed, carrying an ordinary backpack, like a cleaning lady who had wandered into the wrong place. I took a deep breath, striving to remain calm, and patiently explained, "I'm here to save lives. Please step aside." "Save lives? You? Just who do you think you are?" At my words, Lorelei laughed heartily, as if she had heard the most absurd joke imaginable. Her harsh laughter reverberated through the silent corridor, jarringly out of place. "Look at the way you're dressed, saving people? It's clear you're just a cleaning lady. Get out of here quickly; don't cause trouble." She laughed, pointing at me, her face dripping with ridicule. Anger surged in my heart, but I knew this was not the moment for confrontation. I forced myself to suppress my feelings and tried to explain once more: "I really am here to save lives. Time is pressing—please don't stop me." I tried to get past her and go straight into the operating room. However, Lorelei Lawrence was relentless; she reached out again to stop me, her eyes burning with hostility. "No. You must explain everything to me today, or don't even think about going in." "I can't let a stranger wander into the operating room. Who knows what your true intentions are?" Her tone was firm, her stance unyielding, showing no hint of backing down. At that moment, the operating room door suddenly swung open. A nurse hurried out, clutching a medical record. Seeing this, Lorelei Lawrence immediately stepped forward, grabbed the nurse, and anxiously asked, "Nurse, how is my child? Is he alright?" Her voice was laden with worry and fear, her eyes reflecting profound concern for the child. The nurse glanced at Lorelei Lawrence, then at the medical record in her hand, shook her head helplessly, sighed, and said: "The situation isn't looking good. The child is severely injured. We've done all we can, but you must still brace yourself mentally." At the nurse's words, Lorelei's face instantly fell pale, her body trembling slightly, as if she might collapse at any moment. I stood silently at the side, quietly observing everything unfold. My heart clenched sharply as I heard the nurse mention the children's condition. Instinctively, I looked at the medical record in Lorelei Lawrence's hand, where the children's names and illnesses were clearly listed. A sudden shock struck me—it turned out her child had also been in that car accident and was one of the children I was meant to save. Lorelei seemed to notice my gaze; she turned her head and shot me a fierce glare, as if blaming me for my earlier disrespect. "What are you staring at? It's because of you—the jinx—that I was delayed from seeing my child. If you hadn't been lingering here, I would have gone in already." Her tone brimmed with anger and accusation, placing all the blame on me. At that moment, several of Lorelei Lawrence's medical school classmates gathered around. Seeing Lorelei and me in an argument, they all stepped forward to ask what was going on.

The Mortician's Revenge

I gripped the down payment and pushed the door open, only to catch Stella snuggled up in Henry's arms. "Well, look who's back—Nancy?" She rubbed herself against Henry. "Henry said he'd lay all his cards on the table once you paid off the last installment of the loan." Henry wrapped an arm around her, his tone blunt and to the point. "Now that you've seen this, let's get it straight. We've squeezed just about every penny out of that money you earned restoring the remains." "I slaved away day and night to pay off the debt, and this is how you repay me?" I clutched the contract tightly, my voice trembling. "What else did you expect?" Stella scoffed. "Did you...

My Husband, My Jailer

"Take the medicine, Louise." "The doctor said yesterday that I'm nearly recovered." "He's lying to you." A strange smile curled at the corners of his mouth, "All doctors are lying to you." I stared at the water rippling inside the glass. "Why is my phone missing?" "You hurt yourself when you have an episode." He leaned in close, "Remember last week when you were holding broken glass, trying to cut your wrist?" "I don't remember." "Of course you don't remember." His fingertip traced the old scar on my wrist. "You never remember anything from when you're having an episode." I suddenly looked up. "But I'm a PhD in Psychology, Zachary Stafford." "Used to be." I Stood Up Against Workplace Injustice

On my 30th birthday, I clutched the performance report that ranked me among the top three in the Marketing Department, yet my fingertips suddenly turned cold. In Mark Collins' office, he leaned back in his leather chair, and the sound of his fingertips tapping the desk was like a death knell. "Rachel, transfer to Logistics. Your monthly salary will be 1,500," he said without even lifting his eyes. The disdain in his tone stung my eardrums. I suddenly clenched my fists tightly. "Mr. Collins, I've been among the top performers for five years. Why am I being transferred and having my salary cut?" "Why?" He sneered, leaning forward and staring at me. "A 30-year-old woman can no longer keep up...

Power Play at the Karaoke

The moment my phone vibrated, I knew it was her. Ten years have passed, yet the name Sabrina Roger still squeezes my heart like it's yesterday. "Sigmund, I'm drunk. Come pick me up." I rushed into the 302 private room at the karaoke bar and collided with Frankie Zimmerman's mocking face. "Well, well, the loser actually showed up?" He blew smoke rings. "Tonight is the engagement banquet for Sabrina and me." Engaged? My head was buzzing. The crowd was laughing loudly until I spotted her on the sofa—her eyes avoiding mine, the diamond ring on her ring finger gleaming painfully. "Why?" My voice trembled. "My grandmother needs surgery... five hundred thousand." Sabrina Roger choked back tears.收起

Melissa stepped forward first, looping her arm through his. "Ms. Ruby, Daniel loves me. Don't you feel shameless for holding onto the position of Daniel's wife?" "I've been married to him for five years. How dare you, a home-wrecker, act like you're in the right?" Daniel frowned tightly, his tone growing impatient. "Ruby, stop being unreasonable. I clenched the yellowed photo and slammed it down hard in front of Eric Lewis. "Who is this? You married me only because I look like her, didn't you!" "Every bit of kindness you showed me was just an act? This marriage of convenience was a lie from start to finish!" Father suddenly pushed the door open and said in a deep, stern voice.
