Her Secret, His Downfall

"Do you know what I hate the most?" Giselle's red lips brushed against my ear, her voice sweet like poison-dipped honey, "It's idiots like you who can't even attract their own man." I clenched the ribbon on the cake box, my fingertips turning cold. "Jerry's not coming tonight." She chuckled softly, her nails scraping against my cheek. Before she finished, I had already grabbed her wrist. With a sharp snap, the chain on her wrist broke, beads scattering across the floor. Her face suddenly darkened. "Yolanda, are you out of your mind?!" I smiled, turned toward the door, but paused just before opening it and looked back at her. "By the way, is that necklace you're wearing the real thing?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Her Secret, His Downfall"

Today is Jerry Lancaster's birthday. I cradled the cake I'd made myself, sitting on the sofa in the lounge at the top floor of his company. The cake box was tied with his favorite pale blue ribbon, the ends carefully shaped into a bow by me. The air conditioning in the lounge was set a bit too cold; I wrapped my shawl tighter around myself and glanced at the clock on the wall. Just ten more minutes until seven in the evening, Jerry Lancaster said tonight's event would finish early. I pictured the look on his face when he opened the door and saw the cake; I couldn't help but let a small smile tug at my lips. We've been married three years, and every birthday of his I've prepared with care; this year was no different. For this cake, I took half a day off yesterday and spent the entire afternoon practicing at the bakery. My fingers still carried the faint scent of cream and chocolate – proof of the effort I'd poured into it for him. Suddenly, the lounge door was slammed open. The sharp sound of hurried footsteps shattered the quiet in the room. I looked up and saw a woman in a tight red dress standing in the doorway. It was Giselle Cooper, Jerry Lancaster's secretary. Her makeup was flawless, but her eyes held blatant hostility, locking onto me. "What are you doing here?" Giselle's voice was sharp, tinged with mockery. I stood up and replied politely, "I'm waiting for Jerry. Today's his birthday." Giselle sneered, stepped forward two paces, and looked down at me with a condescending glare. "Mr. Lancaster's too busy to see you right now." I frowned, not wanting to drag the fight out: "It's fine, I can wait." "Wait?" Without warning, Giselle Cooper snatched the cake box from my hands and tossed it onto the floor like it meant nothing. The cake box hit the carpet with a dull thud, the teal ribbon spilling loose, cream oozing from the cracks and staining the expensive rug. My chest tightened, and my voice turned cold: "Ms. Cooper, you've crossed the line." Giselle raised an eyebrow, her eyes flashing with challenge. "Listen, Yolanda, Mr. Lancaster only has eyes for me now. You should've stepped aside ages ago." I clenched my fists, forcing down the anger burning inside me: "Please have some respect. What Jerry and I have is none of your business." Giselle suddenly laughed, her voice sharp and biting: "Whether it is none of my business or not, you'll find out soon enough." No sooner had she finished speaking than she suddenly raised her hand and slapped me across the face. The sharp smack echoed sharply through the lounge. A fiery pain flared across my cheek. I turned my head away from the slap, my ears buzzing. Before I could even react, Giselle pulled something from her bag and pressed it hard against my cheek. Her moves were quick and ruthless. I fought to push her off, but she gripped my shoulders tight. "Let go of me!" I yelled angrily. Giselle's smile only grew more smug. She slowly let go, stepped back two paces, and appraised me from head to toe. "So, Yolanda, do you still like this 'gift'?" she taunted. She spoke with a teasing, careless tone. I lifted my hand to my cheek and felt a thin sticker clinging to my skin, its edges still sticky. There was a small mirror on the lounge coffee table; I hurried over, grabbed it, and held it up to take a closer look. In the mirror, a bold black letter "B" was slapped right on my right cheek. That letter was thick and ugly, like a nasty scar, standing out awkwardly on my face. A wave of humiliation hit me all at once, and my eyes immediately welled up with tears. "Giselle, you're crazy!" I spun around sharply, glaring at her with anger. Giselle didn't even flinch; she brushed her hair back slowly and said, "Crazy? I'm just reminding you to know your place." Just then, the lounge door was pushed open again.
