I Was Never the One

"Charlotte, come pick me up." Ryan Larsen's voice came through my phone. When I rushed to the clubhouse, the private room door was ajar. Just as I was about to push it open, I heard his voice: "Charlotte Klein? She's nothing but an obedient plaything." My hand froze on the door handle, fingertips suddenly cold. "You've been with her for five years, and never felt anything?" His friend asked. Ryan Larsen sneered, "Does she deserve it? No background, no status, just a bit competent at work — useful, that's all." He said in a flippant tone, "Once Victoria Fitzpatrick and I settle the wedding plans, I'll give her some money and send her away." I stood outside the door, my whole body trembling. Inside, his friend asked again, "What if Charlotte finds out?" I heard Ryan Larsen light a cigarette, then answer slowly, "So what if she finds out? She's just a secretary."收起

Chapter 1 of "I Was Never the One"

My name is Charlotte Klein. I've been Ryan Larsen's secretary for five years and secretly dating him all that time. In these five years, I've been his most reliable assistant at work and his closest companion behind closed doors. No one at the company knows about our relationship. He said that at work we need to keep things low-key. Once the time's right, he'll make our relationship public and marry me. I believed him. That night, it was almost eleven. My phone suddenly rang, the screen flashing "Ryan Larsen." When I picked up, his slurred voice came through, thick with the smell of alcohol. "Charlotte, come pick me up." "Where are you?" I immediately stood up from the sofa and grabbed my coat. "The usual place, drinking with my friends." He paused for a moment, then named a clubhouse. I responded with a yes, hung up the phone, and ran downstairs. I knew that clubhouse — it was where he often hung out with his friends. He sometimes got drunk there, and every time, I was the one who came to pick him up. Driving, I kept thinking about how I'd make him a cup of sobering tea once we got home. When I got to the clubhouse and just parked, I saw the private room door was slightly open. Loud bursts of laughter came from inside, along with Ryan Larsen's voice. I meant to just push the door open and walk in, but the moment I heard what he said, my feet froze. "Ryan, you really have it all, keeping Charlotte Klein so under control." A stranger's voice rang out. "She's nothing but a compliant plaything." Ryan Larsen's voice was laced with disdain, completely void of the usual tenderness he showed me. My heart dropped suddenly, like something was squeezing it painfully tight, making it hard to breathe. "Plaything? That's kind of harsh." Another voice replied. "I think she's really into you, always running around every day as both secretary and girlfriend. Five years, and I've never heard her complain once." Ryan Larsen chuckled lightly, his tone full of indifference, "If she wasn't reliable at work and obedient, I would've dumped her ages ago." "Just playing around with her, with no background, there's no way I'm marrying her." "True, your family definitely wouldn't approve." "Of course." Ryan's voice carried a hint of pride. "My mom already set it up for me. Soon, I'll be going on a blind date with Victoria Fitzpatrick, the Fitzpatrick Group heiress. Marrying her will definitely boost my company's growth." "Nice, Ryan. Killing it with both career and love. So what about Charlotte Klein?" Ryan Larsen's tone grew cold, "Once things with Victoria Fitzpatrick are settled, I'll naturally come clean with her. I'll just give her some money and be done with it." I couldn't clearly hear what they said after that. My ears buzzed, and all the blood in my body seemed to freeze instantly. Five years. The five years I poured my heart and soul into turned out to be nothing but a joke. What I thought was deep affection was just one of his casual games. The future I dreamed of never had a place for me in his eyes. In the end, I was just an "obedient plaything" in his words from beginning to end. A chill ran from the soles of my feet up through my whole body, making me shiver. I didn't push the door open; instead, I quietly turned around and got back in the car. My hands trembled the whole time I started the engine. Tears fell uncontrollably, hitting the steering wheel and spreading into a small patch of moisture. I thought I'd break down, run in crying and confront him. But when the moment actually came, I felt strangely calm. Back in the house we shared, I didn't turn on the lights and just sat on the living room couch until dawn. Outside, the sky gradually faded to pale gray, and my heart slowly sank to rock bottom. I thought a lot, about all the little moments over these five years, about the promises he made, and about the opportunities I gave up for him. In the end, all the beautiful memories were just my one-sided wishful thinking.

The Same Lie

The scent of the beauty salon's fragrance was sickly sweet; I closed my eyes, allowing the beautician to apply the treatment to my face. Until a blinding flash in the mirror caught my eye—a ring identical to the one on my ring finger. The girl turned her head, smiling with a cruel innocence: "My boyfriend gave it to me. He said it was a one-of-a-kind custom piece." My wedding ring pressed into my palm, leaving a red mark. Yet her next words utterly shattered my three-year marriage: "His name is Pete Silva. Do you know him?"收起

Crazy Ex's Deadly Proposal

My phone vibrated with an unknown number. I swiped it open casually. "Shawn Lincoln, I'm coming back to the country next month. Let's get married." It was Vanessa Fay. Two years have passed, and she still had that entitled tone. "I'm married now. I have my wife and kid." "Then get a divorce and marry me instead." Her voice was cold and sharp—like a knife. I sneered, "Who do you think you are?" "The one who can tear your family apart." She paused, then added lightly, "Your wife is Hazel Williams, right? Comes from an average family, mild-mannered..."收起

The Diagnosis That Kills

Ruby burst into the hospital room wearing a white coat, clutching an IV bottle in her hand and sneering: "Pamela, who would have thought your penicillin allergy is this severe? If I had known earlier, I should have pushed more of it into you." My whole body was covered in itchy red rashes, and my breathing felt tight: "You did this on purpose! You clearly knew about my allergy history!" "So what if I knew?" She leaned over and moved closer, "Caleb only has eyes for me. You and your daughter should have stepped aside to make room for me a long time ago." Just then, Caleb pushed the door open and walked in. I grabbed his wrist and begged:...

My Ex-Wife Returns

On our seventh wedding anniversary, Alex pushed the door open, followed by a girl with a swollen belly. "This is Mia. She's carrying my child." His voice was cold as ice. I clenched my fists tightly. "You've been planning to drive me away all along, haven't you?" "The guest room is yours. She'll take the master bedroom." He shrugged off his coat and tossed it onto the sofa. "I make the rules in this house." Mia tugged at his sleeve timidly. "Alex, the guest room is fine for me..." "No need." Alex cut her off, then grabbed my chin hard. "She's going to take care of you until you give birth. Otherwise — I'll cut off the medical bills for...

I'd just stepped out of my mother's hospital room when a strange text popped up. The title of a forum post stung my eyes. "That's Caleb's hand, right?" Mia's message came straight after. The scar in the photo turned my fingertips cold. I dialed his number. Caleb's voice was laced with forced softness: "Stacy, I'm working overtime at the office." "Working overtime?" I ground my teeth. "How do you hold someone's hand while working overtime?" There was a two-second silence on the other end, followed by a flustered cough. "What nonsense are you talking about? Finding You After Wasting Love

My best friend sent me a wedding invitation while I was curled up in my boyfriend Oscar Cooper's arms, grinning like an idiot. She asked me to be her bridesmaid and even specifically wanted Oscar to be the best man, saying we were the couple she believed in the most. But a week later, Oscar said he had to go on a business trip and refused to attend. It wasn't until I saw a TikTok video of him wearing matching couple outfits, stroking his god-sister's hair and saying, "Only you can wear matching outfits with me." That's when I realized that the three years we had were nothing but a joke I'd been playing on myself.收起
