My In-Laws' Twisted Wedding Rituals

"Phoebe, my mom said, you have to follow her rules today." Harrell Johnson grabbed my hand, his eyes avoiding mine. "What rules?" "You have to crawl on your knees from the door, two meters, not far." His voice grew quieter and quieter. I yanked my hand away: "Harrell Johnson, did you just say that again?" "Just two meters! Bear with it, I swear I'll make it up to you later!" He gripped my shoulders urgently. His mother's sharp voice came from outside: "Harrell! What are you dawdling for!" Pushed and shoved, I was dragged into the banquet hall, countless eyes burning on me like searchlights. His mother sat in the main seat, her red lips curling into a smirk: "Phoebe, crawl over here on your knees." The hall fell silent for a second, then burst into a sharp, jeering uproar. A shiver ran through me as I looked at Harrell Johnson. But he lowered his eyes, deliberately avoiding my gaze. "Crawl!" someone shouted.收起

Chapter 1 of "My In-Laws' Twisted Wedding Rituals"

My name is Phoebe Green, and today is my wedding to Harrell Johnson. The makeup artist had just put the finishing touch on my lipstick when the lounge door was shoved open. Harrell Johnson walked in wearing a sharp suit, but his face showed none of the joy a groom should—only a touch of awkwardness. "Phoebe, there's something I need to talk to you about." He came over and lowered his voice to a whisper. My heart skipped a beat. I straightened my veil, smiled, and asked, "What's wrong? Are you nervous because there are too many guests outside?" Harrell shook his head, avoiding my eyes. "No, it's about my parents. There are some rules we have to follow." "Rules?" I frowned. "It's our custom of serving tea," Harrell Johnson's voice softened. "My parents say the bride has to show sincerity when serving tea; that way, she can properly honor them later." I picked up the glass of water from the table and took a sip, waiting for him to continue. "It means... from the banquet hall entrance, you'll have to crawl on your knees over here to serve them the tea." After Harrell finished speaking, his head dropped even lower. I almost dropped the glass in my hand, staring at him in disbelief. "What did you say? Crawl on my knees?" "It's just two meters, not far," Harrell hurried to explain. "My parents didn't raise me easily—they just want to save face. Can you please bear with it?" Tears instantly welled up in my eyes, the skirt of the wedding gown still spread out on the floor, as pure and absurd as a joke. "Harrell, this is a wedding, not a ceremony of humiliation." I gritted my teeth, my voice shaking. "Phoebe, I'm begging you," Harrell gripped my hand, "All my relatives are here today, don't make my parents lose face. I promise I'll make it up to you later." Before he could finish, Harrell's mother's voice came from outside the door: "Harrell, are you ready? The guests are all waiting!" Harrell quickly replied, then looked at me pleadingly, "Let's go, don't keep everyone waiting." I took a deep breath and wiped away my tears. I told myself that maybe Harrell hadn't explained it clearly, or maybe his parents were just momentarily confused. I followed Harrell out of the lounge, and the banquet hall immediately fell silent, all eyes fixed on me. Harrell's parents sat in the honored front row. His mother wore a red dress, her face showing a haughty expression. The master of ceremonies was about to speak into the microphone when Harrell's mother suddenly raised her hand to interrupt him. "Wait a moment," she said, looking at me with a loud, clear voice. "In our family, the bride must serve tea sincerely. Phoebe, crawl over here from the doorway." The whole room fell silent, my parents' faces instantly turning ashen. My mom grabbed my hand, ready to leave, but was stopped by Harrell Johnson's male paternal cousin. "These are our family's rules. Today is a day of great celebration—don't ruin the mood for everyone." Harrell Johnson's male paternal cousin said with a sharp tone. Harrell Johnson held my other hand, whispering in my ear, "Just two meters, it'll be over soon." The guests began whispering among themselves; some even started to egg things on: "Kneel! Kneel! It's all about filial piety!"

The Ugly Dad

On our tenth wedding anniversary, I joyfully prepared a table full of dishes and carefully made Rachel Jones's favorite strawberry cake. But as I brought out the last dish, I saw my wife intimately interacting with that man named Jim Shawn, while our daughter clung to him with complete reliance, as if they were truly a family. Seeing the couple's ring I had painstakingly saved for worn on Jim Shawn's hand, my heart plunged into an icy abyss. The once warm and loving home felt so unfamiliar, and I was overwhelmed with sorrow...收起

The Prisoner Who Became a Doctor

"Is this the residence of Mr. Felix Shaw?" A familiar voice pierced my eardrums. I looked up. Chris and Mindy were standing at the courtyard gate, holding a little boy in their arms. "Are you a servant?" Chris frowned and sized me up. "You look like my ex-wife." Mindy linked her arm through his, looking down her nose at me. "Cut the crap! My son has a heart condition. Dr. Shaw has to save him! We'll pay you any amount!" "Dr. Shaw does not see outsiders." I held back my hatred, my voice cold as ice. "Quit putting on an act!" Mindy stepped forward aggressively. "We have plenty of money. Do you dare delay his treatment?" "Money?" I let out...

Beware the Bride in Black

"Margaret Quinn, I married you just to keep my family happy, so don't get the wrong idea." Oscar Sterling said this without even raising his eyelid, as if I were nothing more than a speck of dust stuck to the sole of his shoe. "I know." I stirred my coffee calmly and said, "I'm just repaying Old Mr. Sterling's favor from all those years ago." He sneered coldly, finally lifting his gaze to look at me, his eyes dripping with scorn: "Then you better behave yourself and not meddle in things you shouldn't, especially anything involving Debra." "So what you're saying is," I put down my spoon and met his gaze, "even if your so-called 'life saver' turns out to...

Yield For Love

Seven years of marriage, I became nothing more than a shadow of Mark Lynn, even my pinned chat message was "Lynn Family's Closest Contact Network." Until on my younger brother's wedding day, he placed the family crest I had crafted with my own hands around another woman's neck. There were over ninety-nine unread messages in the group chat, and one read, "Why isn't the sister-in-law here?"—exposing me as a laughingstock. I stormed into the hotel, my high heels shattering that pair of bangles, and crushing the last shard of tenderness within my heart. When Mark Lynn knelt to beg for forgiveness, I smiled as I dialed the lawyer's number—the heiress of a grand family does not divorce; she merely becomes...

She Rules

I took my brother's place to serve in the army for six years. On the day of my triumphant return, my armor yet unremoved, above my family's gate hung a white banner—upon which was inscribed the name of my "death in battle." Father brought forth the victory grog, its fragrance no different from the bowl he once poisoned me with. My elder brother wore my military honor robe, smiling as he welcomed the guests; the jade pendant at his waist bore the three characters "Mason Lewis." I traced the old scar along the gun barrel, lowering my gaze and softening my expression: Very well, I shall once again play the devoted person. When the lamps of the palace banquet are...

The Private Jet

That day, I was flying my private jet to a blind date because I had to rush back to the base to handle an emergency malfunction.
