Stolen Melodies

The scent of disinfectant hadn't yet faded when I stood beneath the colossal poster of the man who betrayed me and his new muse. His photo, arms wrapped around her, dominated the headlines, declaring her the "only muse." Those five words pierced my stitched vocal cords like needles. Three years ago, I penned his breakthrough hit; now he sends others to tear apart my manuscripts. But they forgot that the hands that made him can just as easily undo him.收起

Chapter 1 of "Stolen Melodies"

The scent of disinfectant still lingered in my nostrils. I dragged my suitcase, standing below the apartment building, eyes fixed on the window of the thirteenth floor. Three years ago when I left, the curtains here were always drawn halfway, waiting for the latecomer to leave a light on. Now the entire window is cloaked in dust, like an abandoned old photograph. The phone screen glowed briefly; the entertainment headlines pierced my eyes with pain. A photo of Sean Lowell with Rosalind Yip took up most of the page, beneath the headline "A Match Made in Heaven: Sean Lowell Confesses Romance with Rosalind Yip, Calls Her His Only Muse." The words "only muse" pierced my temples like poisoned needles. I took a deep breath and pushed open the glass door of the apartment building. As the elevator rose, the mirror reflected a stranger's face—mine, with a faint scar on my right cheek, a souvenir left by vocal cord surgery. The rusty scraping sound of the key turning in the lock was painfully harsh. The living room was empty, save for my piano draped in a white cloth, like a silent corpse. On the piano bench lay a musical score—the manuscript of Star Trail, the hit song I had penned for Sean Lowell years ago. Just as my fingertips brushed the page, the doorbell rang. The moment I glimpsed Rosalind Yip through the peephole, I thought I was hearing things. She wore Sean Lowell's favorite apricot dress, twirling a pen in her hand, followed by two cameramen lugging cameras. "Ms. Lawrence, I've long admired you." She slipped in sideways, her high heels clicking sharply on the floor. "Sean said you'd be back today and asked me to bring you something." She pulled a photo frame from her bag; inside was a copy of the Star Trail manuscript, boldly signed with Sean Lowell's name. "I heard you wrote this?" Rosalind Yip tapped the paper with a finger lacquered in crimson red nail polish. "What a pity—now everyone only recognizes Sean Lowell's version. After all, the audience always remembers the one who sings." A flush of blood suddenly surged to my head. I snatched the photo frame harshly; the manuscript quivered in the palm of my hand. Those notes painstakingly crafted through sleepless nights, those revision marks Sean Lowell crumpled then smoothed out—all of it had become a cruel joke in this moment. "Give it back to me!" "Ms. Lawrence, is this really necessary?" Rosalind Yip let out a derisive laugh. "Sean said your vocal cords are damaged, that you can never sing again, and even speaking is a struggle, right? Well, behind-the-scenes people don't deserve to stand with us in the spotlight." The sound of tearing paper echoed through the empty living room. I threw the torn paper in her face; Rosalind screamed and lunged at me, her nails aimed straight for my scar. I sidestepped and caught her wrist with strength built from three years of rehabilitation, rendering her immobile. "You dare hit me?!" Her voice was as sharp as nails scraping glass.

Destined to Meet Mr. Green

In G City, the very name of me, Catherine, is enough to make the general public tremble with fear. That day, I stepped into the street-corner cafe originally to take shelter from the rain, but unexpectedly encountered him—Daniel, a man with clear eyes that nonetheless hid a sharp edge. "Do you know who I am?" I tapped the bar lightly, my voice carrying an unshakable arrogance. He looked up, his gaze intense like torches: "From the Scott Family, Catherine Scott. But how can marriage be treated as a trivial matter?" I sneered and flipped out a medical report: "Your mother's life is now in my hands. Marry me, and I'll keep her safe and sound." His face turned pale in...

Three Years a Captive, Half a Life an Enemy

The iron gate of the prison clanged shut. Clutching a damp note worth 500, I stared at the neon lights of F Hotel—they read "Happy Birthday to Dylan and Mario." When I burst in, Mario Scott was swirling a wine glass in his hand. "Mike Scott," he sneered, "prison food not greasy enough for you? Come to mooch some wine?" Dylan's eyes were cold as ice. "Get out." I grabbed the red wine and splashed it in Mario's face. "You forged my signature! Dylan, you emptied the Scott Family's fortune, drove my dad to his death, and tossed my mom into a mental asylum—we need to settle this score!" Mario lunged at me, but Dylan held him back. I fixed...

A Scene of My Brother's Girlfriend

Today is my thirtieth birthday, yet I was nearly struck on the head. My younger brother held a rose, wishing me joy, while his girlfriend stormed in with a bottle of ink, pointing at my nose and shouting "a pickup artist in "bro's" clothing." A pool of black ink seeped down my white shirt, as if instantly staining over a decade of familial love. I clenched the bouquet tightly, hearing my heartbeat explode in my ears—so it seems the sharpest blade is the one delivered by family. From this moment forth, I vow to make them understand: kindness is no weakness, and roses can bear thorns.收起

Shifting Bad Luck

"Charles, do you think after this wedding, we'll be able to stay together forever?" Stella turned her head to look at me, her smile sickly sweet, yet there was a coldness in the depths of her eyes that I had never been able to fathom. I was just about to respond when the brakes under my feet suddenly failed! The car's speed soared wildly down the slope. In the photo placed below the windshield, her smile suddenly turned eerie. "Stella, the brakes are broken!" I roared, yanking the steering wheel violently. The car skidded sharply to the side. But she suddenly let out a laugh, her voice cold: "It's not broken—I took it apart." I was stunned, as if struck...

Obsession Across Three Lifetimes

As soon as the gauze was removed, Bella put on a sexy nightgown and was about to go out. I asked in a cold voice: "It's seven o'clock. Where are you going for afternoon tea?" She averted her eyes: "A friend asked me to go shopping. You just got your eyesight back. Don't overthink it." "Don't overthink it?" I stepped closer, a strange smell of tobacco lingering under my nose. "Who were you referring to when you said 'that one's sexier' on the phone?" Bella's face turned pale: "You eavesdropped on my phone call?" "Why don't you ask about the 500,000 you transferred overseas?" I pulled out the bank statement. "And the stretch marks on your underwear, along with this...

The Birthmark on Her Right Face

The birthmark on my right face was a shame etched into my very bones—until Raymond took a knife for me and lost his kidney. But on the eve of our wedding, I heard his cold voice:"Tina's nothing but a fool. Once I get the shares, I'll give Cindy the wedding of her dreams." "You approached me just for my family's shares?" Trembling all over, I found the five years of deep affection in vain. "Of course." He scoffed. "You ugly freak. That birthmark of yours makes me sick." Hatred burned my heart. Soon, I turned around and chose to marry Kevin—Raymond's sworn enemy. Yet Raymond relentlessly hounded me. He even allowed Cindy to set a mad dog on me, and...

The Disappearance on Christmas Eve

I searched for my daughter Naomi alone for three years, but my husband, Kenneth Leonard, said, "Stop looking; she cannot be found." I smiled, yet tears slipped down my cheeks. "Kenneth, look me in the eyes—have you truly searched for Naomi?" Kenneth Leonard remained silent for a long time, so long that the night outside the window completely swallowed the last trace of light. Then he said softly, "Molly, some things... are better left unknown." But I was determined to know. "Tell me," I grasped Kenneth Leonard's wrist, my nails digging into his flesh, "where exactly is Naomi?" He withdrew his hand, his voice barely more than a sigh: "Tomorrow. Tomorrow, I will take you to see her."收起
