My wife's younger sister, who married into a mountain village, suddenly called me for help. She said she was pregnant with a boy, but the villagers were pressing her belly with a rolling pin. My wife suddenly burst out, snatched the phone, and smashed it on the ground. She showed no pity for her sister's ordeal and even accused me of trying to stir her sister up to get a divorce...收起

Chapter 1 of "The Land Development Project"

The voice on the other end was broken and faint, with blood in it, like paper soaked in water—fragile enough to crumble with a squeeze. It was Sally Sewell, my wife Mandy Sewell's younger sister. She sobbed, saying she had finally conceived a boy this time, but the child inside her felt like it was going to tear her apart. My hand clutching the mobile phone trembled as I asked her for the exact location. The mountain signal was weak, and static kept cutting off her words. "Murphy, they won't call an ambulance, but they keep pressing my belly with a rolling pin because of their so-called folk remedy works..." Before she could finish, Mandy burst out of the kitchen. Her apron was stained with soap suds. She grabbed my wrist holding the phone, her nails digging into my skin with a force that felt like she wanted to crush my bones. The next moment, the phone smashed onto the marble floor. The screen cracked like a spider's web. Sally's crying abruptly stopped, leaving only the crackling hiss of electricity. "Murphy Charles, can you just stop doing this?" Mandy slammed her apron on the ground, her chest rising and falling sharply. "Trying to push your sister into divorcing again? Better to be a peacemaker than a home-wrecker. How can you be so heartless?" I stared at the shattered pieces of the phone on the ground, my throat tightening. It turned out she had always thought it was my younger sister, Yvonne Charles, calling for help on the phone. "If it weren't for Howard's kindness, finding your sister a great husband," Mandy bent down, pulled out many one-hundred-dollar notes from her wallet, flicked her fingers, and the bills fluttered onto my face. "With her bookish look, she's bound to end up an old spinster sooner or later." The bill lay at my feet, the corner of the paper curling up in the wind. I recalled what Sally had said on the phone—the villagers pressing on her belly, that twisted cry she let out—and my stomach churned. "This is the bride price," Mandy said, hands on her hips, chin held high. "You've taken the money, so don't make a fuss anymore, got it? Know the rules?" I looked at her, suddenly feeling like a stranger—this woman I'd been married to for three years, who once vowed we'd live well together, now looked at me with pure contempt. "What about your family's dowry?" She reached out, trying to snatch the wallet from my pocket. "You can't just take the bride price without the dowry, can you? Is your family a bunch of beggars?" I took a step back, my voice cold as ice: "You'll be the one paying the dowry." Mandy was stunned for two seconds before exploding in anger. She grabbed a glass from the table and smashed it on the floor; shards scattered near my ankle, cutting a line of blood. "Murphy, is your family glued to me or what? Your sister is getting married, and you want me to pay the dowry?" "If you've got time to argue with me, you might as well call your dad and have him hurry up and scrape together the money," she stepped over the broken glass, her eyes sharp as poison. "I'm telling you the truth—no one wanted your sister from the start. What they want is someone who can bear healthy children." "If it weren't for Howard helping to arrange it, do you think she could have gotten married?" Mandy sneered, "I suggest you hurry up and send the dowry, or if your sister ends up being bullied in her in-laws' house, don't say I didn't warn you." I locked eyes with her and suddenly asked, "How long has it been since you last contacted Sally?" Mandy's face changed in an instant, like a cat that's just been stepped on its tail. She grabbed my collar, her nails digging almost into my neck. "What do you want? Trying to make a move on Sally? I'm telling you, if you so much as touch her, I won't let you off!" I watched her furious face and suddenly laughed. Sally was her only kin in this world; she used to dote on this younger sister—once a little hooligan whistled at Sally, she brought a bodyguard and turned that whole street upside down, beating up anyone in floral shirts. But now, she tricked her own sister into the mountains where there's not even a signal. I bent down, trying to pick up the shattered mobile phone on the ground, hoping at least to check the call records for a number. But Mandy stomped on the back of my hand, the heel of her stiletto grinding down. "You still want to contact her?" Her voice was thick with contempt. "From the city to that mountain village takes at least four hours. If she can make it through, she wouldn't need saving; if she can't, calling now won't help." I stifled the pain in the back of my hand and looked up at her.

Back to the Night I Lost My Son

"Mom! Candy!" Arthur's little finger pointed at the candy stall, his eyes sparkling like stars. But at that moment, my heart skipped a beat. In my previous life, he was taken away right here. I abruptly crouched down, using all my strength to embrace him. The crowd behind us stirred, just as in my memory. I scooped up Arthur and dashed towards the alley without looking back. His giggles rippled in my arms, yet I sensed an ominous danger. In the shadow at the alley entrance, a man wearing a hat hurried quickly toward me. At that moment, a tall figure stepped between me and the man—it was Frankie Locke. He frowned, clearly annoyed: "Helga, why are you running around...

Revenge of the Forensic Lady

When I opened my eyes again, the sunlight stabbed at me, leaving me dazed. The forensic doctor's textbook on the desk, the still-fresh sticky notes, and these unscarred hands—they all told me one thing: I had been reborn into my sophomore year, five years before that death. The flames of vengeance burned within me. Harry, this time, I want you to pay double for your sins. During the afternoon lab, I deliberately kept to a corner, but still, I ran into Harry. With a loud bang, the reagent bottle burst, flames leaping up. In the chaos, I saw Harry trapped by the equipment. "Harry, come with me quickly!" I reached out my hand to him, only to be violently pushed...

I Couldn't Keep Her

In the morning mist, I ran into Hannah by the stream, rubbing her ankle. When I took out some herbs, she smiled and said, "Thank you, Dr. Frank." Later, she would come to the pharmacy often. She would hold my hand and say, "I like you, and I want to be with you." Suddenly, Dylan kicked open the door, grabbed her, and said, "Hannah! He's just a poor doctor—he's not good enough for you!" "I truly like Frank!" Hannah broke free from his grip. Dylan clutched his chest and coughed, "I've been feeling dizzy a lot lately, Hannah. Will you stay with me for a month to help me get checked out?" Hannah's heart softened. "Frank, he's in poor health....

The Actor Who Lost His Memory

The door is kicked open. Whitney stands in the doorway. "Linda, still clinging here? Charles said long ago this is no place for you." I clench the cuffs of my sleeves. "This is my home with him. No outsider has the right to meddle." "Outsider?" She snorts a laugh. "When I marry Charles, you'll be the one who's redundant. He says even a single glance at your disfigured face disgusts him." Charles's voice rings out from behind me, cold as ice. "What Whitney says is the truth. Pack your things and leave at once." "I burned my face saving you! You swore you'd love me forever!" I roar, voice cracking with rage. He shields Whitney behind his back, tone dripping...

If I Could Undo Yesterday

I gripped the steering wheel tightly, veins bulging on the back of my hands. "Martha Stafford, try saying 'Ralph' one more time." "What, are you scared now?" She laughed out loud, ice glinting in her eyes. "Everything you stole should've been his. Even me." The screeching brakes nearly tore through my eardrums. In the rearview mirror, that truck was coming like the Grim Reaper. I jerked the wheel hard, but she was quicker—using all her strength to shove me aside. A sharp pain shot through me. Blood. So much blood. "Ralph... I love you..." Her breath, barely a whisper, pierced my eardrum like a burning needle. I held her tightly. "Martha! Stay with me!" "...Randal..." Her pupils dilated. "I'm sorry."收起

The Fortune Teller

I am the seventeenth-generation fortune-teller heiress of the Lincoln family. The compass in my palm has spun for ten years, yet I failed to foretell that my own marriage would be a fraud. But the family’s ancestral precept has trapped me for a full decade— Descendants of the Lincoln family shall not divorce within ten years of marriage; those who violate shall bring disgrace to the family. Yet Kevin’s infidelity has long been known to everyone. He never made any secret of it, often bringing Wendy to my fortune-telling stall at the end of the alley. "Master Lincoln," Kevin said, clutching Wendy’s hand, his eyes brimming with provocation. "Tell me—will Ms. Scott and I be together forever?" I bowed my...

The Nanny's Invasion

My originally peaceful life was turned upside down by a housekeeper. "Ms. Lincoln, your floor really needs a good wipe." This was our first meeting. Lily was all smiles, and her humble manner made me let my guard down completely. At first, she did keep the house spotlessly clean. I even felt lucky to have found the right person. But gradually, strange things started happening. "Ms. Warren, where did the imported cookies I left on the coffee table go?" "Oh, Ms. Lincoln, I was afraid they'd go bad if left out too long, so I ate them." Then one day, the desserts a friend had sent me disappeared without a trace. Right after that, she even showed up with her...

Mask of Family Ties

Mindy's high heel ground down on the back of my hand. A cold laugh hissed in my ear. "Mason, can't even take this little pain? Have you forgotten your sister's still in the hospital, waiting for the money?" I bit down hard on my lip, saying nothing. The coppery taste of blood spread across my tongue. She suddenly knelt down and grabbed my chin, her fingers digging in. "Be good, and I'll give you a raise next time. Enough for Grace's medicine for three whole days." I'd just wrenched free when my phone blared. Grace's voice came through, thick with sobs. "Mason! The doctor said I can't stop taking the medicine. Where's the money?" "Almost there," I croaked, my chest...
