The Most Expensive Lesson

2026-03-04

For five years, I gave Sherry Renner everything—money, life, even defied my family's arranged marriage. On the day of the company listing, she announced her engagement, arm in arm with her new lover Seward James, while I drank the poisoned wine she handed me. In the hospital, I stared coldly at the infusion tube. She feigned concern as she visited me: "Richard, don't blame me—Seward James can give me more." "So you wanted to poison me and swallow my shares?" Her face froze. I pulled out the needle, and drops of blood splattered onto the bedsheet. "Sherry," I wiped the blood from the back of my hand, speaking each word deliberately, "who do you think made it possible for your company to go public?" "My training fee was sky-high."收起

Chapter 1 of "The Most Expensive Lesson"

Five years ago, I held Sherry Renner's hand in our rented room and made a solemn promise. I vowed to help her fulfill her entrepreneurial dream and rise to the top of the industry. For that promise, I rejected the family-arranged business marriage. Dad was so furious he shattered his teacup, while Mom wiped her tears, pleading with me to reconsider. Yet I was resolute, investing all my savings into Sherry's Company. Working late into the night revising proposals until three a.m. became the norm. To secure investment, I drank with clients until my stomach bled. I even mortgaged the old family house my grandfather left me to fill the Company's funding gap. Sherry always held me close and said, "Richard, once the company go public, we will get married." I believed her, giving myself day after day without hesitation. At last, the day of the Company listing arrived. After the bell-ringing ceremony, the celebration banquet was adorned with bright lanterns and decorations. Wearing the suit Sherry had personally chosen, I waited for her to honor her promise. But on the stage, Sherry was holding the hand of a young man. He was Seward James, an intern who had joined the Company just three months ago. "Hello, everyone," Sherry said into the microphone, her smile radiant, "today is not only the day the company goes public, but also the day Seward James and I registered our marriage." The entire room erupted in shock; my blood ran ice cold instantly. Seward wrapped his arm around Sherry's waist and looked at me with a mocking smile. "Looking forward to working with you... Mr. Gilman." I rushed onto the stage and grabbed Sherry's wrist. "What the hell?" Sherry shook off my hand, her gaze icy: "Richard, We haven't been right for each other for a long time." The celebration banquet turned into their wedding. During the banquet, Sherry approached, holding a wine glass with a hollow smile: "Richard, drink this, and let us part on good terms." I stared at the stranger she had become and took the wine glass, downing it in one gulp. The liquid burned as it went down my throat, carrying a strange, searing heat. Soon, dizziness swept over me, and I collapsed to the ground, weak and helpless. In my fading consciousness, I saw Sherry and Seward standing side by side, coldly watching me. When I woke again, I was lying on a hospital bed. An infusion tube was inserted in my arm, and my throat was dry and raw. The nurse told me I had been poisoned, and if I had arrived any later, I would have died. It wasn't until the afternoon of the next day that Sherry arrived with Seward. She carried a fruit basket and placed it on the bedside table. "Richard, I'm sorry, I was too busy yesterday." "Too busy?" My voice hoarse, I said, "Too busy celebrating your wedding night with him?" Seward stepped forward, his tone flippant: "Richard, watch your words." "I married Sherry also to help us." Sherry averted her eyes, "Seward's family has more resources; they can help the Company attract more investment." I looked at this treacherous couple before me, consumed by bitter irony. Five years of wholehearted devotion repay me with such betrayal. "Sherry," I said slowly as I sat up, "From today on, we owe each other nothing." She was momentarily stunned. "What do you mean?" I said firmly, "From now on, you and your company have nothing to do with me." Sherry's face changed; clearly, she did not expect me to say that. I stopped looking at them and pressed the call bell: "Please escort them out."

Seven Jobs for You

I heard her laughter down the clubhouse corridor: "Carlos, that idiot, working seven jobs a day is kinda funny." "A poor man with no background, and he actually wants to marry me?" I gripped the drinks cart handle tight, my nails digging into my palm. "Dad, I've thought it through. I'm coming home tomorrow." Ten seconds after sending the message, the phone rang. Janice Salk's eyes lit up when she saw the luxury car picking me up: "But your family isn't..." "I lied to you." I pulled my arm away. "Now I know what you really love." She came to the company, crying and grabbing me, "Please, just give me one more chance!" "Janice, it's already over between us." As...

The Poor Author

I'll never forget that suffocating evening when I was carrying Yale Shawn's favorite liquor, walking happily down to the rented room, only to accidentally uncover the secret he'd been hiding for five years. In the hallway, his friend Mike Luke's voice stabbed into my ears like a needle: "Mr. Shawn, how long are you going to keep playing this act? Your dad said, if you don't go back, the film company's inheritance will go to your younger brother." My blood ran cold in an instant, and the bottle slipped from my hand to the floor. The spilled liquor soaked the ground, dousing my five years of foolish hope. Turns out the person I've always loved was actually a rich master...

She Hid Our Daughter For Three Years

On Christmas Eve, my daughter disappeared from my arms. For three years, I quit my job and searched day and night for her, nearly losing my mind. Three years later, by the riverside, I saw my wife, Nina Rand, holding hands with another man—while our daughter was calling him "Daddy." "Mom, daddy said he'll light fireworks for me tonight!" Wendy's voice was clear and piercing. Nina Rand bent down and picked her up, her smile painfully tender: "Great, let's go home and light them." The moment the fireworks burst open, I dialed her number. "What's wrong?" Her tone was cold. I stared at her as she answered, speaking slowly and deliberately: "Nina, your family looks so happy..."收起

The Player's Victim Act

As soon as my chemotherapy session ended, a live stream of Mark popped up on my phone. He was wearing the wool sweater I'd given him, weeping over his "late wife" in our wedding house, while gifts and donations flooded the screen. I kicked the door open, and his fake grief froze instantly. "Why are you back?" "I'm back to expose your scam of cashing in on my 'death'," I sneered. His eyes flushed with panic. "How else was I supposed to raise money for your chemo?" "Raise money for my chemo," I shot back, "or pave the way for you and your new lover?" Just then, his mother stormed in with groceries and started yelling. "Even if you're not...

Love Reset, Life Reboot

The familiar pair of high heels by the entrance stung my eyes. I pushed open the door. Caleb was leaning against the sofa, smoking, with ash falling onto the pillow I'd embroidered for three months. "You're back." He spoke in a flat tone. "Caleb, this is the tenth time." My voice trembled. The strong scent of rose perfume on him was sickening. He reached out to hug me. "Catherine, don't be ridiculous." The master bedroom door swung open. A woman wearing my nightgown linked arms with him, the red marks on her collarbone glaringly obvious. "Catherine, Caleb and I are truly in love. Don't you think it's shameless of you to cling to this position?" "Shameless?" I laughed until tears...

The Calculating Marriage

At the wedding, he pulled out an agreement and slapped it into my palm. "Rachel, sign this post-marital AA agreement first, and then we'll exchange rings." My knuckles turned white as I gripped the paper. "Simon, today is our wedding day!" "Wedding calls for dutch pay even more," he said, arching an eyebrow. "We split the wedding's utility bills and food expenses fifty-fifty—it's only fair." Simon's mother suddenly stood up to chime in. "I think you're trying to take advantage of Simon." I stared into the unwavering resolve in his eyes, my voice trembling. "You've been planning this from the very start?" He leaned in, his breath as cold as ice. "Either sign it right now, or call off the...
