The Teddy Bear's Secret

2026-03-04

"Half a million, to buy your way out of this city." I steadied myself on my crutch and smiled, "Miss Zimmerman, you really think this lame leg of mine is worth that much?" Her face flickered, "Joshua Locke, don't make a fool of yourself. You were kicked out of the Company like a dog back then. Now who do you think you are, acting all high and mighty?" "Thanks to you." I fixed my gaze on her. "After all, it was you who handed the trade secrets over to Leon yourself." "What nonsense are you spouting!" "Want me to show you the surveillance footage? Even after ten years, I've backed it up plenty of times." She suddenly stood up, the chair scraping harshly against the floor. "What exactly do you want?" I took a slow step forward, lowering my voice: "Tell me, were you the one who ordered the person to break my leg back then?" Her eyes darted nervously, and before she could speak, my phone rang. When I answered, Wendy's anxious, shaky sounds came through—she couldn't form words, only expressing her fear like that. "Wendy? What's wrong?"收起

Chapter 1 of "The Teddy Bear's Secret"

I dragged my lame leg, inching forward step by step to the funeral hall. Today is Veronica Zimmerman's grandfather's funeral, and I'm here to mourn in her place. The employer paid well—enough for Wendy and me to live on for half a month. The incense smoke in the funeral hall was thick, choking my throat. As agreed, I knelt on the tatami mat and cried my heart out. My sobs had to be loud, had to be sad—to satisfy the employer. I don't know how long I cried; my knees had gone numb when I finally heard someone call me. I stopped and looked up—it was Veronica Zimmerman. She wore a black dress, light makeup softening her face, more refined than ten years ago. Her eyes fell on my legs, a flicker of sympathy in her gaze. "Your leg..." she whispered. I braced myself on my knee and stood up, doing my best to straighten up. "It's nothing, just an old injury. Doesn't affect my work." I said with a calm smile. She frowned, as if she didn't believe me. "You haven't had it easy all these years, have you?" She asked again. I shook my head and pulled a tissue from my pocket to wipe my face. "I'm fine. Got work, got food—that's enough." Before she could say anything else, I spoke up first. "Ms. Zimmerman, I've finished the mourning work. If there's nothing more, I'll be going now." I deliberately enunciated the name "Ms. Zimmerman" clearly, to remind her that our relationship was purely employer and employee. She paused, probably not expecting me to be so cold. Veronica looked at me, her eyes full of surprise. She probably thought I'd react like I did ten years ago, overwhelmed and unable to speak properly. But she was wrong. Ten years was enough time to grind away all the feelings and madness. "Let me give you my contact info," she said suddenly. "If you ever need help, just reach out anytime." I waved my hand, refusing. "No need, Ms. Zimmerman. I can handle my own matters." She added, "I know some people who can help you find a better, more respectable job. It's better than doing this." I still shook my head. "Thanks for your kindness, Ms. Zimmerman, but I feel pretty okay now." Her eyes darkened a bit, and she didn't push any further. I turned to leave, but her voice came from behind me. "Joshua Locke, do you really not care about the past at all?" My footsteps faltered for a moment, but I didn't look back. How could I not care? Ten years ago, the first time I saw Veronica Zimmerman, my heart nearly burst out of my chest. Back then, when she smiled, her eyes curved like crescent moons, and she instantly lived inside my heart. I worked my ass off for her, wanting to give her the best life. But later, she fell for the man hidden inside the Teddy Bear—Leon Shane. The day I found out, I lost my damn mind and stormed into her house, demanding answers. But now, those wild emotions and madness have all been worn down by time. I'm just an ordinary guy hustling to get by, no longer the Joshua Locke who once threw himself blindly into love.

When His Ex-Wife Moved In

"Why are some of the piano keys missing?" I placed the fruit plate on the table, making very little noise. Juliette Hunt sat on the piano bench—Sergio Hamill's ex-wife, my "guest." Her fingers glided over the keys like a lover's touch. "They're ugly, so I took some off." She turned toward me and smiled, "Mrs. Hamill, you don't mind, do you?" Sergio Hamill happened to walk in, holding a folder from the hospital. He didn't look at me, heading straight toward Juliette Hunt. "What's wrong?" "Sergio," Juliette Hunt stood up, her eyes red, "I just wanted to play the piano, but Rhoda said I had ruined her precious piano..."收起

A Vengeance Worth a Life

I once thrust a knife into my enemy's belly with my own hands, avenging my adoptive parents. After five years behind bars, I was confronted upon release—by the daughter of that enemy. She held a paternity test, sneering that I was nothing but a discarded child. I sneered coldly, gripping her by the throat, took a photo of her defiant face, and sent it to Finn Quinn: "Your precious daughter—I've 'taken care' of her for you. The debt's due."收起

The Obsessive Cheater's Redemption

Flames devour my body, thick smoke sears my throat. Caleb clutches Mia, standing clear of the fire, his eyes cold as ice. "Did you kill my parents?" I demand, my voice raw and hoarse. He flicks a brow, unapologetic and unmasked. "So what if I did? The Lynn Family's fortune was always mine to take. Besides, Mia wanted it this way." Mia huddles in his arms, her voice soft and syrupy. "Caleb, don't say that. Emily will be heartbroken." "Heartbroken?" I laugh, a bitter, broken sound. "I loved you for ten years, and you destroyed my family, burned down my home—all for her!" Caleb's gaze turns vicious, sharp as a blade. "Emily, blame only yourself for standing in the way...

Back from the Dead to Claim a Debt

"Jagger, you dirty cheat!" Frank spat out a mouthful of blood foam and roared, his hands tied behind his back. I twirled a lighter between my fingers: "Dirty? Didn't say a word when you ruined my paintings, did you?" Cindy lunged at me, trying to stop me, her voice trembling: "Jagger, let him go! It's all my fault!" I clamped down on her wrist: "Your fault? Didn't think about today when you swindled my family's fortune, huh?" She cried out in pain: "I was forced! Frank threatened me!" Frank scoffed: "Quit the act! You were so eager to latch onto me back then! Jagger, I'll never let this go!" I snuffed out the lighter: "Let it go? The game has...

The Due Date of Justice

Behind me came Viola Lawrence's sweet voice: "Daisy, what a coincidence! What brings you to the hospital?" I turned around and met Carlos Jackson's cold, indifferent gaze. Beside him, Viola Lawrence was proudly showing off her belly with a smug look: "Could it be that working as a caregiver has worn you down? Well, serving others is hard work—nothing beats the comfort of carrying my own baby." "Get lost." I gritted my teeth and spat out two words. Carlos Jackson sneered, pulling out a black card and slapping it down in front of me: "Five hundred thousand. Enough for you to quit and take a break. Don't disgrace us out there." "When you stole my mom's necklace and forced me...

The Deadly Sky Diving

Quincy clenched the crumpled sky diving brochure, her voice trembling. "Morgan, let's go sky diving at Eagle's Beak Cliff. I heard it can release all your stress." I gazed into the exhaustion I could not hide in her eyes, my heart aching, and nodded without hesitation. The night before we set off, she placed two sky diving packs by the entrance and repeatedly urged, "Be sure to check carefully; safety comes first." I crouched down, my fingertips tracing the zipper of the sky diving pack as I inspected it, then suddenly froze. Quincy's sky diving pack's load-bearing strap had been sliced through by a blade, nearly severed, held together only by a few fragile threads! I looked up; she was...

My Snack Stand

"What a lousy stand! You don't deserve to be here at all! This food is disgusting—totally junk!" The little girl's shrill shouts cut through the hustle and bustle of the amusement park. My hand trembled, and the hot oil splashed onto my wrist. A sharp, piercing pain surged through me in an instant. "Nina, stop making a scene." That voice—familiar yet strange—it was Raymond. Nine years had passed. He was dressed in a neat suit, exuding an air of nobility all over. It felt as if there were two separate worlds between him and me. "Sir, please keep your child in check, and also..." Before I could finish speaking, a stack of hundred-dollar bills fluttered down in front of me....

He Cheated With My Stepsister

I had taken meticulous care of Sunny, my paralyzed stepsister, for six years, and supported my husband Sam for seven. I had made him rise from poverty to the position of CEO. Yet, the moment I got Sunny's prenatal test report, a bucket of icy cold water poured over me. "Sam is the father of Sunny's baby." "Wendy, we'll register the baby under your name, and you'll remain Sam's wife." "So this is what you call loving me—making me raise a child for my husband and my stepsister?" I screamed out my accusation, only to be met with the perfunctory response, "Don't be unreasonable." Clutching my phone tightly, I said to Lawyer Jones on the other end of the line....
