The White Sheets at the Crossroads

"Hello, is this Nona Sullivan? Please come immediately..." "I'm coming right away." Red lights flashed outside the window, like blood. Police line, white sheet, twisted car. I knelt down, my knees scraping against the concrete. "No—let me see! Those are my parents!" Mark Shane held me tightly, his chest burning hot, but his voice was ice cold: "Nona, don't make things worse." Then she arrived. Yvonne Quentin, like a drifting feather, fell into his arms. "Mark... my heart hurts..." He let go of me as if discarding an old piece of clothing. "Nona, I'll take Yvonne to the hospital first." "Here... You handle it." I stared at the dark stain on the floor and suddenly heard myself laughing. In the distance, police sirens wailed like someone crying.收起

Chapter 1 of "The White Sheets at the Crossroads"

The red invitation card was still spread out on the living room coffee table, the gold-embossed words "Happy Wedding" flashing painfully in my eyes. When the sharp ringtone pierced the quiet night, I was with Mark Shane, packing red envelopes for the best man and bridesmaids for tomorrow. The words "Traffic Police" flashed on the screen, and my fingers suddenly stiffened like stone. Mark Shane noticed my strange reaction, reached out to take the phone, pressed the answer button, and the smile on his face froze instantly after hearing the first words. "Send me the address. I'm on my way." His voice was taut like a drawn bowstring. After hanging up, he grabbed me and rushed out the door. The night scene outside the car window rushed by, neon lights casting mottled shadows across my face, but I couldn't see anything clearly. I only felt my heart being gripped tightly by an invisible hand. Mark Shane was driving recklessly, running two red lights. I mechanically said, "Be careful," but my voice was barely more than a whisper. The intersection where the accident happened was already sealed off with a police line; the flashing red and blue lights cut sharply through the night. I had just opened the car door and rushed toward the police line but was stopped by the traffic officers. My gaze passed over the crowd and settled on the road. That familiar white car sat crookedly by the roadside, its front end completely wrecked, with the airbags fully deployed. On the ground beside the car lay two white sheets, their outlines sharp and clear like knives frozen in ice, stabbing straight into my heart. "No—" I screamed as I lunged forward, my knees hitting the asphalt hard, the pain numbing me, yet I desperately crawled ahead. Mark Shane caught up with me and held me tightly; his chest was warm, but I felt icy all over. "Nona, don't do this, the doctors are still working on it." His voice trembled, but I couldn't catch a word he said. I struggled to lift the white cloth, wanting to see clearly if the people beneath were really my parents. At that moment, a sudden commotion broke out in the crowd, and a slender figure stumbled as she ran over. It was Yvonne Quentin. She had known Mark Shane since they were kids and had always stuck close to him, living with us all these years as the "little sister." Yvonne rushed up to the cloth, but after just one glance, her legs buckled and she collapsed to the ground. Mark instinctively released me, stepped forward quickly, and lifted Yvonne up, calling her name anxiously. I lay on the ground, watching him carefully cradle Yvonne's head, his touch so gentle it felt unfamiliar to me. "Nona, I'll take Yvonne to the hospital first. She has a heart condition and can't handle any shock. I'll leave this place in your hands for now." He hurriedly gave a brief explanation, and before I could respond, he lifted Yvonne, put her in the car, and sped away. The night wind whipped up dust from the ground, stinging my eyes so I couldn't open them. I knelt there all alone beyond the police line, watching the police officers and medical staff coming and going, suddenly feeling like I'd been abandoned by the whole world. When my parents' bodies were being loaded into the ambulance, I finally lost my strength, everything went dark, and I fainted.

I Won't Stay for You

Amid the bone-chilling wind, I clutched the sunflower I had carefully picked myself, waiting bitterly before the Teaching Building. Yet my phone rang first, and on the other end came his perfunctory excuse: "Busy with the club, next time." Before his words had even faded, I turned and saw him holding a red rose, confessing his deep affection to Melody Scott. It was then I realized I had become the most pitiable supporting character in this tale of love.收起

The Bride Who Chose the Nation

Clutching my wedding dress, I stood at the end of the red carpet, only to be met by the retreating back of my fiancé, Henry Johnson. "Susan, Sydney is missing. The wedding is off." Amidst the guests' uproar, Sydney James suddenly appeared through the side door, her skirt fluttering. Henry Johnson rushed over to shield her. "Sydney, are you alright?" Sydney James leaned on his shoulder, but her eyes locked on me. "Henry, I'm a little scared. Please take me home first." "I will not go through with this marriage." I tore off the veil and turned away amid the stunned silence. Right then, the comm from the Initiative cut through the quiet: "Susan Trent, confirm your status — in...

Goodbye to Yesterday

In the VIP section of the press conference, Quincy sat bolt upright in the champagne - colored gown I'd custom - made for her. Tom's hand rested on the back of her chair as he leaned down to whisper something—they looked so intimate. "Didn't you say three years ago that you'd cut all ties with him?" My phone suddenly vibrated. Then, a message with a photo from an unknown number hit me like a thunderbolt: In a hotel room, Tom and Quincy, their clothes disheveled, were kissing. "Morgan, it's your turn to go on stage," my assistant whispered, reminding me. Tom seemed to sense something. He looked up and shot me a glance, a provocative smirk tugging at the corner...

Stolen Melodies

The scent of disinfectant hadn't yet faded when I stood beneath the colossal poster of the man who betrayed me and his new muse. His photo, arms wrapped around her, dominated the headlines, declaring her the "only muse." Those five words pierced my stitched vocal cords like needles. Three years ago, I penned his breakthrough hit; now he sends others to tear apart my manuscripts. But they forgot that the hands that made him can just as easily undo him.收起

Destined to Meet Mr. Green

In G City, the very name of me, Catherine, is enough to make the general public tremble with fear. That day, I stepped into the street-corner cafe originally to take shelter from the rain, but unexpectedly encountered him—Daniel, a man with clear eyes that nonetheless hid a sharp edge. "Do you know who I am?" I tapped the bar lightly, my voice carrying an unshakable arrogance. He looked up, his gaze intense like torches: "From the Scott Family, Catherine Scott. But how can marriage be treated as a trivial matter?" I sneered and flipped out a medical report: "Your mother's life is now in my hands. Marry me, and I'll keep her safe and sound." His face turned pale in...

Three Years a Captive, Half a Life an Enemy

The iron gate of the prison clanged shut. Clutching a damp note worth 500, I stared at the neon lights of F Hotel—they read "Happy Birthday to Dylan and Mario." When I burst in, Mario Scott was swirling a wine glass in his hand. "Mike Scott," he sneered, "prison food not greasy enough for you? Come to mooch some wine?" Dylan's eyes were cold as ice. "Get out." I grabbed the red wine and splashed it in Mario's face. "You forged my signature! Dylan, you emptied the Scott Family's fortune, drove my dad to his death, and tossed my mom into a mental asylum—we need to settle this score!" Mario lunged at me, but Dylan held him back. I fixed...

A Scene of My Brother's Girlfriend

Today is my thirtieth birthday, yet I was nearly struck on the head. My younger brother held a rose, wishing me joy, while his girlfriend stormed in with a bottle of ink, pointing at my nose and shouting "a pickup artist in "bro's" clothing." A pool of black ink seeped down my white shirt, as if instantly staining over a decade of familial love. I clenched the bouquet tightly, hearing my heartbeat explode in my ears—so it seems the sharpest blade is the one delivered by family. From this moment forth, I vow to make them understand: kindness is no weakness, and roses can bear thorns.收起
