Unkept Promises

The words on that unfamiliar app pricked at my heartstrings. The sound of running water in the bathroom died down, and Eric's footsteps drew near. "What are you doing with my phone?" His voice tightened abruptly as he reached out to snatch it. I stepped back half a pace, holding the phone up to confront him. "'Seven years of toughing it out, used to putting on a brave face'—is that talking about us?" His eyes darted away as he stumbled over his excuses. "Someone else sent that. I logged into the wrong account!" "Logged into the wrong account and still replied to every single message?" I gritted my teeth, staring him down. "Said you were afraid of getting my hopes up, afraid to be the bad guy?" He reached out to touch me, then snatched his hand back sharply. "Nicole, listen to me. It's not what you think." I let out a cold laugh. "Not what I think? Then who was it that sent you those messages with weird symbols just now?" He opened his mouth to speak, but the phone in his pocket suddenly rang. I raised an eyebrow and glanced at him sideways. "Not gonna answer that? I suppose it's your 'client', isn't it?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Unkept Promises"

Today is the first anniversary since Eric Lynn and I ended our seven-year long-distance relationship. We booked the Y Hotel downtown, known as the "couples' sanctuary." The room was spotless, the air laced with the sweet scent of white roses—my favorite flower, and he remembered. "Tired? Want to rest for a bit first?" Eric Lynn pushed my suitcase into the corner, his voice carrying a deliberate gentleness. I shook my head, leaning against the headboard. "I'm okay, traffic wasn't too bad." He smiled, picked up the towel draped over the chair back, and said, "I'm going to take a shower. Later, we'll eat at that fancy restaurant downstairs." "Okay." I nodded, watching him walk into the bathroom. His phone lay on the bedside table, the screen dark and quiet. Seven years of long distance had taught us to be completely honest with each other. His phone was never locked, and neither was mine. As I reached for the remote to change the TV channel, the phone suddenly lit up. It wasn't the familiar green W Chat icon, nor the message envelope, but a symbol I'd never seen before. Compelled by some strange impulse, I reached for the phone. My fingers brushed the cold device, and my heart unexpectedly skipped a beat. There was no password; a simple tap unlocked it. I opened that unfamiliar app, and the very first post on the homepage was from this account. The profile picture was a blurred night sky, completely unrecognizable. The post was short, but it made my blood run cold instantly: "Seven years of long distance have ended, but I'm not happy at all—just exhausted and lost, unsure if this relationship should continue." The poster was the account owner, Eric Lynn. A few comments hung below, each replied to one by one. Between the lines, there was nothing but resistance and fatigue towards the relationship. "So, have you stopped loving her?" Someone asked. He replied, "I don't know. Maybe it was wrong from the start. I've just endured seven years, gotten used to forcing it." "Have you told your partner?" "I don't dare, and I don't want to. She's full of hope, and I don't want to be the bad guy." "Has he stopped loving me?" That thought hit me like a tide, instantly flooding my mind. Seven years apart—I survived countless nights alone in an empty room, endured feeling fragile and uncared for when I was sick, and the helplessness of saying "I miss you" through a screen. What kept me going was always his promise: "Wait until I'm stable, then we'll never be apart again." The sound of water in the bathroom stopped, and footsteps gradually drew closer. I hurriedly put my phone back in place, my fingertips trembling. Instinctively, I grabbed the pillow to straighten it, pretending nothing had happened. Eric Lynn stepped out, drying his wet hair, a white bath towel wrapped around his waist, water droplets sliding down his neck. His gaze swept over the bedside table, then landed on my face, his eyes briefly flickering away for some reason. "What's wrong? You look awful." He came over and reached out to touch my forehead, then hesitated and pulled his hand back. I clenched my palm tight, forcing calm: "It's nothing, just a little tired, maybe." He made a soft "oh," grabbed his phone and glanced at it quickly, his fingertips tightening, knuckles paling. The air grew suddenly heavy; we said nothing, just the faint hum of the air conditioner between us. My mind churned, wanting to question him about that post, to ask if he really saw this relationship as torture — but the words got stuck. I was scared of hearing what I didn't want, scared of breaking this fragile 'completeness' we'd barely managed to hold together.

My Right Groom Was His Brother

Before my consciousness slipped away, I clearly heard their final words— Heidi Lewis: "Handling the ashes is such a hassle. Can I just toss them in the trash?" Chuck Smith: "Do as you wish, baby." Hatred stabbed through my heart like an ice pick. When I opened my eyes again, I was reborn. On the day of the engagement party, Chuck Smith smiled warmly and gracefully, just like before. As both sets of parents raised their glasses, I slowly stood up. "I will not be marrying him." The entire room fell silent. Chuck Smith's father slammed down a cup: "Chloe Allen, are you playing us?!" I met Chuck Smith's suddenly cold gaze and laughed without warning. "I can be married."...

I Regret Saving You

"You know? They all say I look like her." I held my wine glass, standing behind Arsenal Lancaster, my voice as soft as if I was talking to myself. He turned around, his eyes flashing with panic for a moment, then quickly dimming. "Marty, don't be ridiculous." "Ridiculous?" I smiled, stepped forward, tilted my head up to look at him, "Arsenal, tell me—was the marriage certificate fake?" His pupils contracted sharply; he remained silent. "I heard it," I leaned close to his ear, speaking each word clearly, "You said you kept me because I'm obedient, not like Selena White who throws tantrums." He grabbed my wrist in one swift motion, his grip so hard it felt like he wanted to...

As Love Dies

I once believed that our seven-year marriage was unbreakable—until that MMS tore all illusions apart. In the photo, he stood before the hotel room door, a brooch I had personally selected pinned to his collar. The pork rib soup in the claypot still bubbled gently, yet I had already drawn the knife. During the seventeen seconds the elevator descended, I pictured thirty different scenes of the blade falling. But before the revolving door's glass, I saw eyes colder than any blade—my own.收起

The Viral Video That Shattered My Marriage

In the smoke-filled private room, a line of girls stood before Marcel Brewster. His friend Ralph Martel laughed and nudged him, "Marcel, pick one?" Marcel Brewster did not refuse. He simply turned his face slightly, his gaze lingering for a full three seconds on the girl with the best figure. I recognized that look—it was the expression he had when he was interested. At that moment, my mobile phone vibrated. A photo arrived from an unknown number: Marcel Brewster holding another woman's waist in a hotel room. I was turning to leave when I collided with a woman in a white dress. She gently touched her slightly rounded belly and smiled at me. "Are you his wife?" Her voice was...

I Escaped My Stingy Husband

Married for ten years, I've always been strictly controlled by my husband financially—even our daughter has to get his permission to buy a hairpin priced at five. That time, I bought the hairpin without telling him first, and we, mother and daughter, were locked in the basement for three days to reflect, starving and drinking rainwater. When we finally got out, I realized my husband was shockingly generous and gentle with his first love and her son, handing over two hundred thousand in compensation without so much as a blink. I knew this life had no future, so I decided to run away with my daughter...收起

A Balloon of Betrayal

With the first cut into the anniversary cake, the balloon burst, and ice water suddenly surged out, soaking the dress I had carefully prepared. I knew at once—this was another one of Heather Wallace's tricks. "Carson Depp," I said, wiping the cream from my hand, "we're done." He hesitated, then laughed bitterly, "Stop it. I'll scold her later." I stared at the impatience in his eyes. "Every single moment with you disgusts me." His face darkened. He stepped forward, seizing my wrist. "Caroline Donovan, without me, you are nothing." I shook him off, no longer pretending to be calm for the first time: "Then let's see. Without you, who am I?"收起

He Gave Her Diamonds When My Mom Died

"Viola, I really have no money left." Isaac Salazar pulled his hand back, his cufflink glinting coldly under the streetlight—it was the birthday gift I gave him last year. I looked toward the emergency room, my voice shaking beyond control: "Just fifty thousand, Isaac..." He turned his face away, his Adam's apple moving as if he were swallowing something: "Your mother's illness—treating it is pointless. Let it go." I looked at him as if I were meeting him for the first time. Seven years—from school to work—he said he would marry me, that he would care for my mother alongside me. "What about her?" I held my phone screen up to his eyes; the entertainment news headline was glaring, "When...
