What Lay Beyond Him

My phone vibrates. A photo pops up from an unknown number—Mark is cutting a woman's hair, his gaze stinging like a blade. I clutch the phone and rush home. He's just slipped on his shoes, reeking of an unfamiliar perfume. "Who is this?" I slam the photo down in front of him, my voice trembling. Mark glances at the photo, his face paling for a split second before hardening into coldness. "Did you go through my phone?" "Someone sent this to me!" I step closer, pressing him. "Who is she? How long have you been together?" He averts his eyes. "Since you've seen it, I won't lie. I'm serious about her." "Serious?" I grip his arm, my nails digging into his skin. "What about our eight years of marriage?" He yanks his arm free, his voice sharp and cruel. "It's over! Ruby, don't push me." His phone rings suddenly. The name "Amy" blares on the screen, searing my eyes. He answers, his tone softening in an instant. "I'll be right there." He hangs up, grabs his coat, and heads for the door. I block his way, my voice hoarse. "Aren't you afraid her husband finds out?"

Chapter 1 of "What Lay Beyond Him"

Lately, the dreams have left me gasping for air. In the dreams, Mark Collins and a strange woman are always there—so close, so intimate it stings. When I wake up, the space beside me is usually cold. Mark always said the company was busy; back then, I believed him without question. That weekend, I decided to buy the cranberry bread he loves. Passing the cafe on the corner that we often go to, the glass door caught a familiar profile. It was Mark. Across from him sat a woman in an off-white knit sweater, her long hair falling over her shoulders, smiling with eyes that curved at the corners. Mark Collins reached out and gently brushed a stray lock of hair off her shoulder. That touch was so tender, I almost forgot how long it had been since I'd felt anything like that. I stood frozen, my hands and feet icy cold, breath growing heavy and labored. I don't know how long I stayed there, until they stood to leave—only then did I instinctively slip behind the phoenix tree. The woman linked her arm with Mark Collins's; they walked side by side, laughing and talking. I gripped the empty shopping bag so tight my nails nearly tore into my palms. When I got home, Mark Collins still wasn't back. I sat on the sofa, staring at the wedding photo on the wall, feeling only irony. The door lock clicked, and Mark Collins came in, changing his shoes. "Where did you go today? Didn't see any messages from you." His tone was flat, just like usual. I looked up at him, my voice trembling slightly, "And you? Went to the cafe?" Mark paused briefly while changing his shoes, then went back to his usual rhythm. "Yeah, talked over some things with a client." He avoided my eyes and headed straight to the bedroom. "Client?" I stood up and followed him into the bedroom. "A female client, wearing an off-white knit sweater, with long hair?" Mark Collins turned around, his face expressionless. "You were following me?" "I wasn't following you. I just happened to see it." I stared into his eyes, searching for a flicker of guilt. But all I found was coldness. "Since you saw it, I won't hide it from you." He leaned against the wardrobe, his tone casual. "Her name's Amy Scott. We've been seeing each other for a while." A shiver ran through me. Even though I'd expected it, hearing it with my own ears shattered me. "Why?" My voice cracked. "What do all these years we've spent together mean?" "When feelings fade, they just fade." Mark Collins frowned, his tone sharp with impatience. "Don't make a fuss for no reason." "Make a fuss for no reason?" I looked at him in disbelief. "Mark Collins, you're cheating, and you actually say I'm making a fuss for no reason?" "At this point, what do you expect me to do?" He didn't look at me anymore. He pulled out his phone and started scrolling through messages. I stared at his cold profile, and the last flicker of hope inside me broke completely. It seemed like it was really over between us.

My Funeral, Your Wedding

He trampled over my old wounds to protect his new love. And when I was coughing up blood and close to death, he threw down the wedding invitation, thinking I was just playing the victim, saying, "You have to come to my wedding." The Paid Companion

"Owen Lloyd, don't even think about leaving me in this lifetime." I gently pushed her away and smiled. "Miss Sharpe, three years are up." She froze, her eyes clearing instantly from a daze. "What do you mean?" I leaned close to her ear and lowered my voice, "Game over. Do you know what I told myself every night before going to sleep these past three years?" She stared at me, breathing heavily. I said, "Just one more day of holding on, then I'm free." Her face went pale as I turned and walked toward the villa's front door. Suddenly, behind me, came her trembling shout: "Owen Lloyd! Do you believe... I'll make sure you can't leave this city?" I stopped...

The Super Expensive Racket

The badminton racket emitted a sharp tremor on the final smash, and as the crowd erupted in cheers, I only heard Emily Sue's cold voice: "Thirty thousand dollars for a racket?" She stared at the racket in my hand, her eyes like she was looking at a criminal. This racket was a coming-of-age gift from my father, and also the last straw that broke our engagement. Emily Sue's lips trembled, while my fingers gripped the handle tightly, suddenly realizing: what separated us was never just Jill Franklin.收起

My Husband Made Me Miscarry Nine Times

The cold surgical light pierced my eyes, making it impossible to open them; the doctor's distant, muffled voice reached me: "The ninth time, Mrs. Jones, your body..." I didn't hear the rest, fixating instead on the door. Earl Scott pushed the door open, impeccably dressed in a suit, still clutching his phone. "Is it over?" He glanced at the monitors without a flicker of concern. "The driver is downstairs to take you home." "Earl Scott," my voice was hoarse, alien even to myself, "this is your child too." He froze, turning to regard me as if I were a troublesome object. "Jennifer Jones, know your place. You have the status of Mrs. Scott; don't be greedy for more."收起

My Pregnant Husband

The day my husband Evan Shane decided to carry our child for me, the sunlight was dazzlingly bright. He said it was called the "Seahorse Daddy Plan," a romantic idea for men in this new era. I watched him sign the surgical consent form, his pen moving smoothly as if signing an ordinary contract. Nine weeks later, he was vomiting terribly while I calmly put on my lipstick. In the mirror, the corners of my mouth couldn't help but curl into a smile.收起

Laura's Rebirth

This is the tenth time my husband has stood me up. The nurse avoided my eyes. "Dr. Harmon is... discussing your case with Dr. Gilman." Discussing the case? The man who once gave up everything to study medicine for me now stays late into the night discussing cases with another woman, leaving me alone on our anniversary. "Laura, please listen to me—" Riley Harmon rushed in, trying to grab my shoulders. I pulled away sharply and flung open the wardrobe door. Three pieces of lace lingerie that aren't mine hung glaringly next to his shirts. "What do you wanna say?" I grabbed something and slammed it hard against him. "What are these? Are these some medical tools for discussing my...
