His Live-in Chef

2026-03-04

On David's birthday, I caught Ruby wearing my nightgown, held tightly in his arms at home. "She's just the new chef I hired," he explained casually, but he couldn't deceive me. However, thinking of how David had taken meticulous care of my mother when she was critically ill, my heart softened in the end, and I agreed to his proposal. During our honeymoon, David and I went scuba diving together. Before we descended into the sea, he held my hand tightly and said, "Don't worry. I'm here." But moments later, he let go of my hand deep in the ocean, and my oxygen tank malfunctioned suddenly. I was on the verge of drowning when my diving instructor rescued me. Then an anonymous text message exposed the whole truth: "It wasn't David who saved you. David has always loved me!" It turned out that everything—from hiring her as the chef to proposing to me—was a scheme he'd plotted to drain my family's resources dry. I stayed calm, gathered solid evidence, and brought his company to ruin, leaving him betrayed and abandoned by everyone around him. When we met again, Ruby screamed at me, "You have everything! Why won't you just let us go?"收起

Chapter 1 of "His Live-in Chef"

David Shawn and I have been together for three years now, and the biggest challenge has been his stomach. It's not a matter of fussiness, but true fragility—during college, pulling all-nighters for startup projects left him with chronic gastritis. Even a slightly off-flavored bite will send him curling up on the couch, sweating cold drops. He's famously picky; the moment he opens a takeout box and smells that uniform greasy aroma of mass delivery, he wrinkles his nose and won't touch a bite. Cooking for himself is an even greater disaster. One night, after I worked late, I came home to a kitchen filled with thick smoke. There he was, holding a burnt pot of instant noodles by the stove, flour smeared across his face, looking innocent as he said he tried to make me some egg noodles but ended up burning through the pot. From that moment on, I quietly resolved to find him a personal chef he truly liked. I practically turned the whole city's personal chef agencies upside down, interviewing no fewer than twenty people. There was a retired chef from a starred hotel—his skills were impressive, but his dishes focused too much on plating and ceremony, missing the warmth of home cooking. There was a nanny good at homestyle cooking whose flavors were decent, but she kept forgetting David Shawn's dietary restrictions and ended up adding pepper and peppercorns—both no-go for him—into the dishes several times. And then there were a few young cooks who either, confident in their skills, aimed too high and fell short, or were clumsy and couldn't even keep the kitchen clean. Just as I was about to give up, the agency recommended Chef Lee to me. Chef Lee is in her fifties, with her hair neatly styled and wearing a clean floral apron. She speaks softly and gently, and you can tell right away that she's someone who gets things done efficiently. She pulled out a menu of her signature dishes, all soothing and nourishing for the stomach, from rock sugar and snow pear stewed with fritillaria, to yam and pork rib congee, and steamed sea bass—each dish perfectly tailored to David Shawn's dietary needs. "I used to work in the hospital cafeteria for five years, cooking specifically for patients. I know which ingredients soothe the stomach and which seasonings to avoid," Chef Lee explained with a smile. "Mr. Shawn's condition—Ms. Scott, rest assured, I'll take special care." At the first tasting, Chef Lee prepared four dishes and a soup: Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, Stir-Fried Seasonal Vegetables, Mushroom and Tender Chicken, Tomato Beef Brisket, and a bowl of Winter Melon, Kelp, and Pork Rib Soup. The sweet and sour pork ribs were simmered until tender and falling off the bone, the sauce thick, glossy, and perfectly balanced between sweet and sour—with not a hint of chili. David Shawn unusually ate two extra bowls of rice, repeatedly declaring it the best sweet and sour pork ribs he had ever tasted. I tasted the stir-fried seasonal vegetables—simple oil wheat lettuce, crisp and tender, seasoned only with salt and a touch of light soy sauce, yet naturally fresh; in that moment, I instantly felt at ease. The chicken in the Mushroom and Tender Chicken was cooked so tender that it fell apart at the chopsticks' touch, and the mushrooms soaked up the broth, bursting with savory fragrance in every bite. The Tomato Beef Brisket was tangy and appetizing, the beef brisket stewed until soft and tender, and the sauce was perfect for soaking up rice. The Winter Melon, Kelp, and Pork Rib Soup was even more refreshing; the winter melon stewed to a translucent softness that melted in the mouth, with the rib's rich flavor infused into the broth, without a hint of greasiness. That day after dinner, David Shawn unusually took the initiative to chat with Chef Lee for a bit, reminding her to cook more stomach-friendly dishes in the future. Chef Lee agreed to everything and thoughtfully asked about the frequency and exact location of his usual pain, promising to prepare some targeted medicinal cuisine next time. In the days that followed, Chef Lee came to our home to cook every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Each time, she arrived half an hour early to clean the kitchen before starting to prepare the ingredients.

The Last Three Months

"Tabitha, I have late-stage gastric cancer." On the other end of the telephone, Evan Scott's voice was like a broken bellows. It had been five years since he last contacted me. I stood by the window, watching his black luxury car beneath the tree and his figure, as thin as paper. "So?" My voice was as cold as ice. "Let's remarry." He coughed with heartbreaking force. "I want... to have a home in my last three months." I almost laughed out loud. "Evan Scott, on what grounds do you think I would agree?" "I'm dying soon. Just... pity me?" I watched the leaves falling outside the window as a bitter yet satisfying thought took root and ran wild in my...

The Painter's Revenge

Seven years ago, Harry "accidentally fell from a building". I will never forget what Miranda said: "That ungrateful wretch Harry actually dared to resign—I must make him pay for it!" Andy responded impatiently, "He's just a teacher. I had someone 'take care of him' and made sure it was done cleanly." I suppressed my hatred with all my might, staying by Andy's side, and became his mistress. "Wendy, you're better than all of them," Andy said. Now, the moment of revenge has arrived. Watching Andy rush into the abandoned warehouse, his face filled with panic, I let out a soft laugh: "Andy, seven years have passed. Do you still remember Harry?" His face turned deathly pale, and his voice trembled:...

The Money to Her During My Pregnancy

Today is my due date, yet Leo Clark is busy tipping "Sweet Babe" on his mobile phone, deaf to my cries of pain and bleeding. Clutching my maternity bag, I signed the consent form for a C-section alone; the cold light of the operating room mirrored his chilling words last night: "Don't overthink it." The instant the child cried, I decided—to sever not only the placenta but this entire marriage. Later, I donated the fifty thousand I received to the welfare home, letting the money born of betrayal accumulate virtue for my daughter. Three years later, Leo Clark was released and begged me to remarry him; my daughter, nestled in Hector Jones's arms, babbled, "This man is dirty, we don't...

The Most Expensive Lesson

For five years, I gave Sherry Renner everything—money, life, even defied my family's arranged marriage. On the day of the company listing, she announced her engagement, arm in arm with her new lover Seward James, while I drank the poisoned wine she handed me. In the hospital, I stared coldly at the infusion tube. She feigned concern as she visited me: "Richard, don't blame me—Seward James can give me more." "So you wanted to poison me and swallow my shares?" Her face froze. I pulled out the needle, and drops of blood splattered onto the bedsheet. "Sherry," I wiped the blood from the back of my hand, speaking each word deliberately, "who do you think made it possible for your...

Seven Jobs for You

I heard her laughter down the clubhouse corridor: "Carlos, that idiot, working seven jobs a day is kinda funny." "A poor man with no background, and he actually wants to marry me?" I gripped the drinks cart handle tight, my nails digging into my palm. "Dad, I've thought it through. I'm coming home tomorrow." Ten seconds after sending the message, the phone rang. Janice Salk's eyes lit up when she saw the luxury car picking me up: "But your family isn't..." "I lied to you." I pulled my arm away. "Now I know what you really love." She came to the company, crying and grabbing me, "Please, just give me one more chance!" "Janice, it's already over between us." As...

The Auctioned Bride

Under the spotlight, Murphy Frank proposed to me for the sixty-sixth time. His expression, my submission—everything was a lie. Three days later, his mistress Dora Jennings had me kidnapped and put on the auction stage. She ripped my dress to shreds and screamed into the eyes of the greed-filled crowd: "Look, this is the fiancée Murphy Frank has rejected!" Laughter erupted from the crowd, bidding cries rising and falling. One million, five million... "Fifty million." The gavel fell, and the entire room fell silent.收起
