Runaway Proposal

"Miss Beth, your package." I opened the envelope, and an invitation slipped out—groom Yves, bride Reese. Just then, my phone rang—it was that number I hadn't seen in three years. "Beth, did you get it?" Yves' voice was hoarse but familiar, "Don't go to the wedding." I traced the edge of the invitation. "What, are you afraid I'll cause a scene?" "I'm afraid you'll get hurt." He paused for a moment. "Do you still have that note...?" "I threw it away a long time ago." I sneered, "Just like you left me behind back then." The sound of a lighter clicked on the other end of the line. "What if I told you the car accident back then wasn't an accident?" "What do you mean?" "Reese's father threatened me with your life. I had to marry her, but I've been gathering evidence all these years." "Now they've found out." His voice suddenly tightened. "Listen, no matter what happens, don't trust anyone—" The call abruptly ended. A knock sounded at the door, followed by a stranger's male voice: "Miss Beth, please open the door. We're from the police department." I stared through the peephole, softly asking into the busy signal: "Yves, what exactly have you dragged me into?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Runaway Proposal"

At 6:30 p.m., the office building lights gradually went out. I carried my canvas bag and stepped out of the elevator. The evening breeze brushed my face, carrying the chill of early autumn. I wrapped my light jacket tighter and quickened my pace toward the residential complex. The convenience store at the entrance to the community was still glowing with warm yellow light. I had planned to go in and buy a bottle of milk, but then recalled there was still half a box in the refrigerator, so I just walked past. As I reached the apartment building's entrance, I looked down to find my keys, when my eyes were suddenly drawn to a red box by the door. It was an exquisite wedding candy box, tied with a golden ribbon. Beside it lay a white envelope—clearly a wedding invitation. I froze for a moment, then bent down to pick it up. The front of the invitation was embossed with a gold foil "wedding" character. When I opened it, the card inside bore the names of the groom and bride. When I saw the name "Yves Gresham," my fingers froze, and my heart skipped a beat. Yves Gresham—a name I thought had long been buried deep in my memories—suddenly felt like a needle gently pricking me now. I flipped over the invitation and found a yellowed piece of stationery tucked inside. The edges of the stationery were worn, and in familiar handwriting was just one sentence: "If I had an extra ship ticket, would you come away with me?" That sentence was like a key, instantly unlocking the floodgates of my memory. I stood still, clutching the stationery, my fingertips growing slightly cold as past scenes surged through my mind. Just then, my phone rang, and the name flashing on the screen was Yves Gresham. I hesitated for a few seconds, then swiped to answer. "Beth," Yves' voice came through, with a faint, almost imperceptible hoarseness, "did you get the invitation?" I said nothing, only gripping the phone tighter. "I know this is sudden," Yves continued, "but I regret it, Beth. I truly do." My throat tightened, and I stayed silent. "Could you... take a chance with me?" Yves' voice was filled with desperation. "The day after tomorrow is my wedding, but I don't want to marry her. The one I want to marry is you. Beth, will you run away with me?" Run away? Hearing those words, I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. Yves is always like this—after making a decision, he easily tries to take it back. "Yves," I finally said, my voice calm as still water, "do you really think the world should revolve around you?" There was a brief silence on the other end, then Yves' voice dropped: "I know I was a jerk before, but now I truly realize my mistakes." "Beth, can you give me one more chance, please?" I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and memories of my girlhood flashed through my mind.

My Brother's Asylum

On Christmas Eve, I sat in the corner of the dining table, watching the man I had secretly loved for three years—my brother, Miles Fisher. We had a secret romance that lasted three years; he used to be my favorite man. "Laura," he said softly, approaching with a bowl of meat, his voice still gentle, though it churned my stomach like a storm. "You used to love eating this the most." "No need, I don't like it anymore." After saying this, I turned away and poured it out. His face darkened. "Pick it up and eat it!" It was as if I could hear the caregivers' orders echoing inside the asylum once more. I knelt beside the trash can, swallowing...

His Live-in Chef

On David's birthday, I caught Ruby wearing my nightgown, held tightly in his arms at home. "She's just the new chef I hired," he explained casually, but he couldn't deceive me. The Last Three Months

"Tabitha, I have late-stage gastric cancer." On the other end of the telephone, Evan Scott's voice was like a broken bellows. It had been five years since he last contacted me. I stood by the window, watching his black luxury car beneath the tree and his figure, as thin as paper. "So?" My voice was as cold as ice. "Let's remarry." He coughed with heartbreaking force. "I want... to have a home in my last three months." I almost laughed out loud. "Evan Scott, on what grounds do you think I would agree?" "I'm dying soon. Just... pity me?" I watched the leaves falling outside the window as a bitter yet satisfying thought took root and ran wild in my...

The Painter's Revenge

Seven years ago, Harry "accidentally fell from a building". I will never forget what Miranda said: "That ungrateful wretch Harry actually dared to resign—I must make him pay for it!" Andy responded impatiently, "He's just a teacher. I had someone 'take care of him' and made sure it was done cleanly." I suppressed my hatred with all my might, staying by Andy's side, and became his mistress. "Wendy, you're better than all of them," Andy said. Now, the moment of revenge has arrived. Watching Andy rush into the abandoned warehouse, his face filled with panic, I let out a soft laugh: "Andy, seven years have passed. Do you still remember Harry?" His face turned deathly pale, and his voice trembled:...

The Money to Her During My Pregnancy

Today is my due date, yet Leo Clark is busy tipping "Sweet Babe" on his mobile phone, deaf to my cries of pain and bleeding. Clutching my maternity bag, I signed the consent form for a C-section alone; the cold light of the operating room mirrored his chilling words last night: "Don't overthink it." The instant the child cried, I decided—to sever not only the placenta but this entire marriage. Later, I donated the fifty thousand I received to the welfare home, letting the money born of betrayal accumulate virtue for my daughter. Three years later, Leo Clark was released and begged me to remarry him; my daughter, nestled in Hector Jones's arms, babbled, "This man is dirty, we don't...
