Winter's End, My Beginning

"You're leaving tomorrow." My voice was so calm it felt unfamiliar even to myself. He spun around sharply: "Carrie Sterling, you're just itching for me to get out, aren't you?" "Jenny Watson can help you return to the city faster." I pushed the letter of introduction across; its corner scraped along the edge of the bed, making a faint rustling sound. He grabbed my wrist tightly, squeezing until my bones ached. "Is that how you want to shove me onto another woman? Huh?" I lifted my eyes to look at him: "Calvin Silva, last life when I knelt begging you to stay, you said I ruined your future. Now that I've paved the way beneath your feet, why are you afraid to walk it?" His breathing suddenly stopped, his pupils constricted: "... What last life?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Winter's End, My Beginning"

The flame of the oil lamp flickered, casting my fragile shadow against the earthen wall. Tonight is the eve of Calvin Silva's return to the city; this realization pricks my heart like a slender needle. At this very moment in my previous life, I was clinging to his legs, crying and wailing, smearing my snot and tears all over his one unpatched shirt, hysterically begging him not to leave. But in the end, he still left, carrying his "unreasonable" disgust toward me, and the following year, he married a city girl, living in full splendor. And I, during that winter when medicine and care were scarce, died from a difficult childbirth on the cold earthen bed, with no one even to bring me warm water. "What are you daydreaming about?" Calvin Silva's voice brought me back. He sat on the edge of the bed, his fingers absentmindedly tracing the wood grain along its surface. I pulled my gaze back and picked up the half-folded old cotton jacket he had laid out, carefully smoothing the cotton inside. "It's nothing. I was just thinking the city will be warmer than here, so this cotton jacket might not be needed, but you'll bring it anyway, just in case the weather changes." He froze for a moment, probably not expecting me to be so calm. In my past life, I would have already jumped up by now to accuse him of being ungrateful. How could I care whether he felt cold in the city? I pulled out a neatly folded piece of paper from under the mattress and handed it to him. "This was sent by Jenny Watson, the daughter of the village party secretary next door. She said it can help you return to the city, much faster than waiting for an assignment." Calvin Silva's expression darkened instantly. He didn't take it but just stared into my eyes. "She came by yesterday and slipped it to me," I placed the paper beside his hand, my tone flat. "Jenny's a good girl, capable too. She suits you well." No sooner had I finished speaking than he suddenly grabbed the letter of introduction, crushed it into a tight ball, and then tore it apart fiercely. Bits of paper fell to the ground like shattered butterfly wings. "Carrie! What do you mean by this?" His voice was heavy with suppressed anger. "Are you just hoping I'll leave? Hoping I'll be with another woman?" I lowered my eyelids, concealing the mockery in my eyes. In my previous life, I fought desperately to keep him, and he said I was shackling his future; in this life, I pushed him away, and now he says I'm hoping he'll be with another woman. This man's thoughts are truly harder to figure out than the mud on a field ridge. "I just think this is a good opportunity." I picked up the scraps of paper on the ground. "Returning to the city is your wish; it's always better to wait a few days less." He stared at me for a long while, his eyes full of complexity. Finally, he let out a heavy sigh and turned to lie on the other side of the bed, his back to me.

The Pregnancy Portrait

The makeup artist's puff just brushed my face when my phone lit up— My bestie sent me a live stream screenshot: My husband's painting me, five months pregnant, as some other nude pregnant woman. The live stream comments were flooding with "Is that his wife?" Grace White blinked and said, "It's a secret." I shot up and flipped the makeup table—no more maternity shots, now it's a cheat catch. Unmasking the Cheating Professor

Mark's roar shattered the silence: "Lucy, if you dare abort this baby, I'll never forgive you!" I clenched my fists, my voice cold: "Forgive me? Did you ever think of forgiving me when you were fooling around with Mia?" He kicked the wall and shouted: "It was just a fling with her! This baby has to stay in the Collins Family!" "The Collins Family?" I laughed through my tears. "You never cared about the Collins Family's dignity when you beat me, did you?" His tone softened a little, but the threat was unmistakable: "Stop this nonsense. Repent and turn back. If you dare burn everything to the ground, Nora will never have peace again." I glared at him furiously: "You...

Vanished Groom

"Ava, wearing this wedding dress, you must be the most beautiful bride in the whole world." Frankie Cobb was adjusting my veil, his fingertips as gentle as if touching a fragile dream. But the next day, he disappeared without a trace. My calls went unanswered. He wasn't at his office, and his friends were clueless. I searched the whole city like a madwoman. Until a notification popped up—the street photography video, where he was smiling in a daze. "Is your wedding coming up soon?" The host asked. "Yes, it's soon." "Any regrets before the wedding?" He was silent for a few seconds, his voice clear and piercing: "My greatest regret is not being able to marry the one I truly...

A Mother's Fight for Justice

I was pushing a pink insulated box shaped like a little bunny, selling ice cream in the residential community with my twin daughters, just wanting them to learn to be brave. The next moment, luxury high heels shattered all tenderness—Melody Lee threw the identity of "Jimmy Young's wife" right in my face. She ordered her bodyguards to hold me down, forced Daisy and Nola to raise their hands and hit me, while the live stream chat erupted with "The other woman deserves to die." Clutching the marriage certificate crushed by car wheels, I heard my daughters crying and shouting, "Mom, don't go." At that moment, I realized: gentleness won't save us; counterattack is a mother's armor.收起

From Sweethearts to Enemies

When he stood by my hospital bed with Vanessa Black, his pregnant mistress, I had just lost our third child. "Tracy Fey," Jerry Murphy said casually, "Vanessa will be living with us from now on, so you'll have to put up with it." I looked at him, realizing that we end up hating each other: "Let's get a divorce." He laughed like I'd told a joke, chuckling low: "Divorce? Do you think you can survive without me? You're a worthless loser with no job and nowhere to go." He leaned in close, whispering an ultimatum in my ear: "Remember, as long as I, Jerry Murphy, am in this city, you'll never get a break." "Oh? Is that so? Jerry Murphy,...

The Spoiled Mooncake

I unpacked the mooncake box brought back by Mia Collins; a musty stench hit me, the manufacture date frozen a decade ago—our wedding year. Our daughter bit into one, white foam instantly spilling from the corner of her mouth, her small body arching like a bow in my arms. I rushed her into the Emergency Room, and the moment the red light flared, I heard our seven-year marriage snap cleanly in two. The nurse handed me the critical condition notice; I pulled out a pen, but first slid over the divorce agreement: "She signs first, then I will." Mia Collins knelt on the floor, weeping and begging for mercy, while I stared at the fresh bite mark on her collarbone,...
