Chapter 1 of "Never Be A Substitute"
The air was heavy with the sweet scent of flowers, blended with the warm heat unique to summer nights.
Tonight was the Valentine's Day. I clutched the couple rings in my pocket, my fingertips slick with a thin sheen of sweat.
Four years. Caleb Lynn and I had been together for a full four years.
Tonight, he said he had a surprise for me.
I stood in the corner of the banquet hall, watching him move through the crowd in a sharp, tailored suit.
My heart felt as if it held a rabbit inside, pounding wildly.
Maybe he was going to make our relationship public.
That thought had barely surfaced before a burst of applause drowned it out.
Caleb Lynn stepped onto the stage and took the microphone from the host.
The spotlight fell on him, his profile so striking it was impossible to look away.
"Today, I have something important to announce."
His voice echoed through the speakers, filling the entire hall.
I held my breath.
"I've liked someone for a long time."
His gaze swept across the crowd and finally settled behind me.
I instinctively looked back.
My sister, Sophia Scott, stood there with a shy yet triumphant smile.
"Sophia,"
Caleb's voice was gentle enough to drip with tenderness, "From the moment I saw you, I knew you were the one destined for me."
Will you be my girlfriend?
The entire room fell silent in shock.
I felt as if frozen in place by a spell.
My blood seemed to freeze instantly, then raced wildly to my head the next moment.
My ears buzzed so loudly I couldn't hear a thing.
All I saw was Sophia running onto the stage, throwing herself into Caleb Lynn's arms.
All I could see was them embracing, like a burning iron branding itself into the back of my eyes.
I don't know how long passed before I found my legs again.
With unsteady steps, I walked out of the banquet hall, the evening breeze brushing against my face—sharp and biting cold.
Back at the apartment I shared with Caleb Lynn, my hand trembled as I slid the key into the lock.
I pushed the door open, and the room was engulfed in darkness.
Without turning on the light, I went straight to the sofa and sat down.
The darkness washed over me like a tide, slowly swallowing me whole.
Tears finally broke loose, falling silently onto the cold floor.
I don't know how long I cried before I stood up and stumbled into the study.
Caleb Lynn's computer was still on.
As if compelled by some unseen force, I opened the chat window he hadn't closed.
It was a chat window between him and his best friend, Charles.
"Caleb, are you really planning to confess to Sophia tonight?"
"What about Melissa?"
"Her?"
Caleb Lynn's reply pierced my eyes: "She's just a stand-in."
"If she didn't resemble Sophia even a little, how could I have wasted four years with her?"
"Does Sophia know?"
"Soon. Once I've dealt with Sophia, I'll be honest with her."
I couldn't read any further.
My stomach twisted violently. I covered my mouth and rushed to the bathroom, dry-heaving uncontrollably.
It turned out that four years of love had been a carefully crafted lie from start to finish.
I was nothing more than a replacement for my own younger sister.
The person in the mirror looked pale, eyes red and swollen, so disheveled it was almost a joke.
